Still confused about Calcium and Magnesium!

Okay....so I WAS taking 1000 mg of calcium a day (along with 500 mg magnesium in the same pills)......but then when I read all the magnesium stuff I stopped taking the calcium/magnesium and started to just take magnesium by itself. I stopped taking the calcium becaue I didnt' want all my magnesium to be eaten up. I know that taking extra calcium has been helpful for me in the past for the emotional symptons of pms (which I always get really bad)....but I don't want all my magnesium to get "eaten up" by the calcium. So here is my question ---

I know I've read on the boards that around 600 mg is the max magensium I should be taking......

so would it be a really bad idea to take the 1000 calcium/500 magnesium

and THEN on top of that take another 400 magnesium?

or woudl this just be nutty and way too much magnesium? and if i decide to just stick with the magnesium on its own...is tehre anything else anyone finds helpful for pms stuff?

As is I take Omega 3 fish pills and I just started taking a multivitamin
