Changed hair structure

Lately I´ve been hearing lots of reports here about changed hair structure during AD withdrawal and I´ve noticed this as well. Hair is very coarse, thicker strands than before and has a waxy feel to it, not like ordinary greasy hair but a thick waxiness. My hair has also become lighter in colour. Anyone on PP noticed something similar?

2004 tapered Zoloft too quickly after sudden onset of muscle stiffness and extreme restlessness on full dose. Severe and prolonged WD problem with a long list of symptoms. Considerable mental but very little physical improvement so far. Last Zoloft dose April 18 2004.

Re: Changed hair structure

Mine is thinner and coming out. I'm on clonazepam (tapering off) and I read it is a side effect. Even the hair dresser said that drugs can affect our hair.

Put on Paxil in 1996 for Post-partum depression. After 5th withdrawal attempt, went into severe debilitating withdrawal, restarted Paxil in the ER which didn't work anymore. Taken off again quickly by a shrink, started on Lexapro. Body rejected all drugs except benzos. Currently off all drugs. I'd say I'm recovered. Yeah, I'd say so.

Re: Changed hair structure

Well Bev, why colour it? Skunks are cute! We don´t have them in Europe, only seen them on TV. I haven´t noticed any grey, strangely enough I don´t have any grey hair at all (I´m 51) but I´m sure I will before this is over, wouldn´t be surprised if it turns grey overnight any time now. What´s happened to my hair is another colour change, it´s yellowish and lighter, looks like it´s been bleached with peroxide

Re: Changed hair structure

Lexapro is known to cause hair loss.

Re: Changed hair structure

ah....my natural hair color is really pretty drab. the henna i use makes it SO shiny and a lovely red and covers the grey so well that it looks like brighter red highlights! If i could get the skunk stripe to be silver white on the rest of it red....i would do that! those greys are brilliantly WHITE! Ive got about a 1/2 inch now...and it REALLY shows!

I got a few grey hairs in my divorce....not very noticable. But this has really made the classic "shock" of white hair. If i went totally white.....i would dye it purple

Re: Changed hair structure

Go for the white skunk strap, Bev! Sounds lovely! I´m sure a hairdresser can fix that for you.

Re: Changed hair structure

The usual complaint is hair loss, but one time a hairdresser was puzzled that a perm she was doing on me didn't succeed. That is, until I revealed (or she asked, can't remember which) that I was taking antidepressants. She said that many people experience that their hair goes through weird changes like that on these meds. They really do change hair structure.

Re: Changed hair structure

*ive had my share of perms*

my hair has shifted a bit from being dead straight....to the grey hairs mostly having a look like a perm wave....but really gentle.

Re: Changed hair structure

I thought it was kind of "curious" also, at the time. Previous perms had gone okay, so, for all I know, this new hairdresser was not used to working with my type of hair (very baby fine)! I think I remember something about her having to work with a stronger solution - or something to that effect. It was quite a while ago, so I have trouble remembering the exact details. While I can't blame everything on the medications, I guess I would not be surprised to find yet another odd side-effect.

Re: Changed hair structure

I had typical Scandinavian baby fine hair before and while on the ADs. The coarse, thick hair came during tapering and withdrawal. I don´t want to have the other weird physical wd problems bu I would LOVE to keep this hair quality. It grows much faster than usual and so do my nails. My nails used to be very hard and good but although they grow very fast now, the quality is bad, they are thin, soft and taste like acid! Awful! These pills have certainly changed just about everything in us!
