Glaxo adds heart warning to ADHD drug
Mon Aug 21, 2006 1:37pm ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK.L: Quote, Profile, Research) (GSK.N: Quote, Profile, Research) has said it will add a boxed warning about possible heart risk to its attention deficit hyperactivity drug Dexedrine, according to a letter posted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Web site on Monday.

In its letter, the drugmaker said it was adding the warning "in response to a Food and Drug Administration ... request sent to the manufacturers of all CNS (central nervous system) stimulant products approved for the treatment of ADHD."

How big of them! And how nice of the FDA to make such a "request."

Yes indeed: "please inform your patients that serious heart problems and death may result. Unless you don't want to. You don't have to. But you should. But we won't regulate it or anything."

I've decided that I have finally reached a point where I have no comments left. (That will change tomorrow, but for now...)

Re: Glaxo adds heart warning to ADHD drug

My son in law is now off them and doing well. Chelsea told me he started right before they got married and I was scared. I told her all I knew, but then left it alone. I told her if his personality changed somethings up. And changed it did. He did not remember one holiday to her. No cards or gifts. She would call me crying. Mr. Romantic was gone. Then he stopped remembering anything at all. He got his dose doubled.

Now they were fighting all the time, he hated his job. He had worked his way up and was in management and doing really well for young man his age. He wanted to quit one day and she made him go in and do it right and give notice and they told him he was fired, he was under survelleince for embezzlement. He admitted to it and had to go file a police report. 1,500 dollars. Now she knew where he was when he would just dissapear and how he was able to get all these nice little things he wanted, they could not afford.

He was a good clean kid before this. I came here and got directions on tapering and what to expect for them and guided them along. He's working in a car dealership now and they are making it, but I don't see much hope for future for him there. He's very frightened about what happened to him and very sorry and Chelsea is rightfully disillussioned about marriage now. They have not even had there second anniversary yet.

I'm hoping from now out things get better for them.

Completely recovered!

Lilly -

What a sad story! If only more people could/would put two and two together in regards to these drugs. My hope is your family will recover from this awful drug fall-out. Something needs to be done about these drugs - and quick, before more people's lives are destroyed.

Re: Glaxo adds heart warning to ADHD drug

I noticed that this was only a small blurb, so far, in the news industry. However (as I just posted), I have watched two segments (so far) about
"Post Wedding Day Blues".

People seem to gravitate towards news of all sorts of new "psychiatric disorders", but when it comes to heeding the warnings about serious side-effects of drugs prescribed for these new "disorders", they are strangely silent and unresponsive.

Re: Glaxo adds heart warning to ADHD drug

I think they are going to be fine. He was a very intent young men before this and he is getting that back again. Just a lot for a young couple to go through. I'm glad I knew about stuff and was able to guide it somewhat when things got really bad.

Thank you both!
