liver detox

hi everyone

obviously ssri's and liver function are well documented, is it wise to try a liver detox or cleanse?

Re: liver detox

I had abnormal LFT's at my physical in June, I stopped paxi in July and repeat bloodwork done earlier October revealed that they returned to normal. I am having other issues with w/d, blurry vision, floaters, weird pains...but at least the liver is working well again!?!

Re: liver detox

You have to be careful with detoxing. Detoxing dumps a load of toxins into your body and can make w/d symptoms very severe.

Re: liver detox

The most gentle thing I have heard to cleanse the liver in w/d is just to put fresh lemon juice in your water.

I wouldn't touch a cleanse in w/d if you paid me, even if one had a more mild w/d...still wouldn't touch it. I would wait until the w/d was over for sure.

Re: liver detox

I have heard that some detox programs actually pull all of the residual ssri out of your body at once and therfore throws you into a cold turkey withdrawal. I bought some detox foot patches but I am going to wait until I am completely off of Paxil for about 6 months to use them.

I was concerned about any residual ssri leaving the body too quickly, and also if one is still tapering, that any detox, possibly even milk thistle, might cause the med still being taken while tapering (or still in the body after going off) to leave the body too quickly.

I would be very careful about this. A mild detoxing like milk thistle (which is mild but very effective) might be a good idea in the future, but I would err on the side of caution and wait for quite some time until w/d and recovery are over, unless there were an acute medical problem from exposure to something that presents an immediate danger.

Re: liver detox

I'm real sensitive to stuff, but I have been using the verseo foot patches with no problem, and once in a while I drink a cup of 'AM detox tea' made by celestial seasons. It's mild, it gave me no problems. My homeopath said that teas are a very gentle way to detox. This one has milk thisle in it.

Re: liver detox

sounds like milk thistle is best overall. i may get slapped on the wrist for this one but a couple of years ago whilst at 20mgs i had a course of colonic irrigation would this have made me feel worse?

Re: liver detox

Milk thistle are one of the better ones, I've used it and its very effective and gentle...I also have a more "powerful" detox formula but have stayed away from it... I am now "detoxing" via acupuncture, its very powerful and I only recommend this at a late date in withdrawal.

Regards, Johnny

Re: liver detox

I forgot to mention, in regard to the foot pad: My husband and I both used them, then sent them to a lab to see what came out of us. There was a bunch of chemicals, including arsenic, and they even found isopropyl alcohol, (rubbing alcohol) and other stuff!! They really do work, and they don't cause ANY side effects. I got mine online from Verseo.
BTW: I don't think the colonics would have hurt you. It's just a huge enema.

Re: liver detox

I read here that detoxing is not recommended during withdrawal because it can remove the drug from your system faster, causing you to wean faster than you had intended.

But I have been having problems with gallstones and have been doing gallbladder cleanses, which seem to be helping. I weighed it up and decided the gallbladder attacks were worse than withdrawal and needed immediate action. Because gallstones are related to bile production, I've been using a liver tonic containing milk thistle and dandelion with no problems.

Re: liver detox

I was drinking different teas, one was straigh dandelion, the other was a combo of liver cleanse, milk thisle, etc. None of the teas bothered me at all. My homeopath said the teas are very gentle. Not like taking the herb straight up.

Dawn, thanks so much for posting this. I once considered using these foot pads, but was skeptical about them.

I'm waiting til my recovery is better since I'm still in a condition where I don't want to draw any more toxins out at this time out of concern it could make me sicker, but I certainly want to try those pads when my health is better, since I know I had heavy metal and other toxic exposures, though my doctor (who specializes in dealing with such things) feels I should avoid anything detoxing at this time.

So glad to hear those pads really work. Thanks!
