Dr. Phil and Paxil
Well, I'm watching Dr. Phil right now, and heard the strangest thing. Todays topic is OCD's. He was saying that with talk therapy and meds like Paxil, will help. Ok, sounds good...logical and helpful. Not a problem, right? Not until he said it had little to no side effects. Is he a specialist in this area? No. It's one thing saying "take meds", it's another thing to name it and say it has no side effects. Ugh. You know these people are going to ask their Dr's about this, and them either not knowing about the side effects/withdrawls or not sharing it, more people are going to get hooked. Makes me kidna mad.

but for the majority of people Paxil has no side effects. we unfortunately are in that 5% minority that experiences problems with Paxil.

Okay I emailed him
I sent the show an email, but I thought he had said it was "not habit forming." "Little or no side affects" is different, but oh well. I'd say "withdrawal symptoms" are up there with side affects. Just trying to help! I'll post the email address... see next topic.

where are these statistics you quote from ? because i'm willing to bet these stats are backward. that 95% of those on paxil or withdrawing from paxil have very bad problems with this med while 5% experience no problems. is there a source for the, "we unfortunately are in that 5% minority" quote? |

Yeah, I remember seeing figures like those in the packet sent to me by GlaxoSmithKline.
As for side affects - I guess they are little to none, or were for me. The main thing I noticed was trouble with caffeign making me too hyper while taking Paxil, and some minor sexual side affects that could be reversed by other things. But the WITHDRAWALS? Well the withdrawals are HELL and I bet they are for a lot more than 5-percent of the people trying to quit the damn drug! |

stats and Philly
If it's 5% or 95%, that doesn't matter. What matters is that the potential for harm is there. I know this world is funny where if there's only a 5% risk to life, it somehow makes it acceptable.
You'd think one single death or one single discomfort would cancel the whole thing? I know if some product I sold harmed one person undeniably, through death or just great discomfort, I'd yank it off the shelves. A war that kills 5 people is no better nor worse then one that kills 5 million. It's still an act that invites physical death, a denial of life, the core of who we are. I guess I don't like denial. How often humanity rationalizes that we can quantify life. DOH! It's either there, or it isn't. How many of our loved ones do we miss that are 79.5% dead, or 29.5% alive? We either live fully for the announcement of life, or we don't. It's like saying a woman is 12% pregnant. LOL! Or that there's only 0.5 grams of fat, so it's fat free. Riiiiiiight. Dr. Phil can't know everything. But what he does know and invites others to realize, is generally pretty helpful stuff. I wouldn't attack him, but yeah, feel free to share your truth! Just do so kindly. He may not know about you/me/us, the knowing of which could change everything.
