Magnesium for me
(THE POLL ALLOWS MORE THAN ONE CHOICE.)
For at least a couple of years now I have taken 500 mg - 750 mg magnesium before I shut off for the day. I don't do it because of any nervous system benefits or because of some deficiency. I take it because it makes me "regular". I have plenty of fiber in my diet in the form of fresh and raw vegetables and fruits and whole grains, but without the magnesium I can be stopped up for days and I become very uncomfortable. I buy whatever is the lowest price on the shelf, and it is usually magnesium oxide combined with magnesium stearate. The reason I am posting is to ask: Many benefits have been associated with magnesium intake, such as blood pressure reduction, immune system functioning, muscle function, and the like. Maybe I noticed something years ago when I started experimenting with supplements to help me feel better after Paxil, after reading what others have taken and deciding to try this or that. But this go-around I have not noticed any difference, any added benefit. Except for the quotidian relief from that particular bloated and pressure feeling, I have noticed no other effect whatsoever from taking magnesium. ¿Why do the rest of you take magnesium, and do you notice any other difference? Has it helped you at all? And what type do you take?

Re: Magnesium for me
I use a magnesium citrate product called Natural Calm. I take a teaspoon of powder in water every night before bed, about 175mg. I've taken it for a few years and really feel that it helps with muscle tension and relaxation. I would take more (the suggested dosage is 350mg per day) but am leery of overdoing the laxative effect.

Re: Magnesium for me
Hi Pat, I tried to vote that I don't take it but it keeps coming back and saying I already voted. I wish I could take it but it's a real laxative for me.

Re: Magnesium for me
I take 300-400mg of Magnesium Glycinate a night to help me sleep and for my muscle jerks (nocturnal myoclonus.) It definitely helps me not to be constipated and lately I think it is helping TOO much. Loose stool and what not (TMI?). I had my magnesium levels tested recently and and after taking Magnesium nightly for over a year, they are on the high side of normal. This could explain the loose stools. Problem is when I take less than 300mg the jerks seem to be worse so I don't know what to do really. Probably keep taking it. So yeah it has helped me a lot.

Re: Magnesium for me
I don't take magnesium daily any more. A couple of years ago I started getting strange heart rhythms and I found that taking magnesium supplements corrected the problem. Since then I take it sporadically, probably a couple of times a week I guess. I used to take magnesium citrate, but these days I use magnesium orotate, 300-400mg. I've personally never noticed any relaxing effect or anything like that. Also, my daughter was having trouble getting to sleep because of restless legs and the magnesium has helped her with that.
