billy21,
I've heard that Prozac isn't recommended for anxiety as it is likely to make someone MORE anxious. If you need something ONCE IN A WHILE, I would ask the doc for a drug that has a mild sedating effect; Xanax, Lectopam, etc... Do your homework, as this is YOUR body and you need to be as informed as possible and not take any medication blindly. Doctor's can be very helpful, but they too, are human and don't know EVERYTHING! My best to you, Toots. |

Billy - I was originally given prozac for anxiety based post natal depression and it made my anxiety ten times worse.
I then switched to seroxat which worked ok but failed to be able to get off it despite trying to reduce slowly for more than 2 years. After giving it a lot of thought I finally decided to switch to prozac again to help me get off the paxil (sorry all a bit complicated.) Although some of the resulting anxiety was obvioulsy due to quitting the paxil it was again made much worse by the prozac. I really really wish that I had never been persuaded to take SSRI's in the first place because effectively I had to take paxil to get over the effects of prozac but at the time I had two tiny babies so wasnt really in a position to argue. If you really feel that you need medication and thins dont improve soon (some people say that the initial anxiety from prozac wears off after a while) then Id go back to the dr and say that the prozac has made you feel worse, and can they suggest something else. starting any ssri at too high of a dose can cause extreme anxiety that usually balances out in a few weeks and gets progressively better over a few months. I would only recommend prozac for depression or ocd, not anxiety.

Agree with the others, prozac is definitly NOT for anxiety. For depression, maybe but NOT from anxiety... even doctors told us that in medical school! For anxiety there are many other SSRI or benzos you can take and of course 1000 other solutions that you will find on this forum

I tried Prozac recently very slowly and got very anxious. Stayed with it for 6 weeks and finally the doctor said if I had not adapted yet, I probably never will.
SHe wanted to put me on Lexapro but I had enough already with any SSRI's.... |
