Weight questions

Those of you who lost your Paxil weight as you tapered, was it because you stopped craving carbs and sugars? Or did it just come off due to some change in metabolism/chemistry? I can't believe the way I want to eat. And the weight just keeps on coming! I managed to lose 30 lbs last year because my stomach was nauseous from the anxiety...at some points I just drank Ensure because I couldn't eat. Now that the intense anxiety spells have passed my appetite is back and the weight came back with a vengeance. I never had weight issues prior to the last 5 years. I would blame pregnancy and age (honest factors) but I also know that's when I started SSRI use too. I hope coming off these meds will help in my weight loss efforts...I've given both Weight Watchers and even Atkins a fair shake and seen very little improvement these last years. But since Paxil....OMG...it's even worse.

Re: Weight questions

PRE-PAXIL i weigh one hundred pounds..the first and second times i went on paxil i gained 20 lbs..this time..i literally changed my diet to fresh foods, no junk food, salads, grilled chicken, yogurts and water only..and go figure i gained 38 lbs...eating healthier..now since getting under 10mgs i have lost about 10 lbs..but still its just crazy..that is paxil for you..because when i have gone off..about 6 months after i lost it all back down to under 100 lbs...Paxil loves to make people gain weight..it is one of the main side effects..

Wow! You know, I was on Weight watchers before and during my withdrawal stuff last year, and even when I almost stopped eating, and if you know weight watchers it's set up so you have a certain amount of points per day and each food is assigned a point value. I couldn't even eat HALF of my daily points, I was eating a little yogurt cup and maybe one piece of bread with peanut butter on it and some juice all day, or just one or two Ensures for the day. I was amazed that the weight was coming off ONLY at the expected rate of 1-2 pounds a week. I mean, if I had been eating my full daily points target I would have either not lost a pound, or even still been slowly gaining, know what I mean? For the small amount I was eating, I should have been losing weight at an alarming rate, but it was nothing more than what is expected (and healthy). Crazy. I ended up quitting weight watchers. I am going to be joining again next week though but this is good, maybe as I taper I'll see my efforts actually show!

Re: Weight questions

I weighed 105 when I started it. After about 2 years I started having a lot of stomach acid / digestive troubles which I later attibuted to the Paxil. By 3 years I had gained 60 pounds!!!

I have to take Lyrica to control widespread nerve pains, too. I got nerve damage from a bladder infection (Interstitial Cystitis) and my vision also went double all of a sudden - no more depth perception. Just a side complaint.

Anyway.... I swear - I have done TWO MILES A DAY on the treadmill since mid-March and only lost 10! We really have to bust our asses! I've been going at 3.3mph for 40 mins!

Re: Weight questions

Drugs like Paxil (and Paxil in particular) are extremely anticholinergic - these are known for weight gain. Most people don't realize, but if you take benadryl every day you will likely gain lots of weight too. It's really only when the offending agent is removed (Paxil and its binders) that the effects should wear off and the weight come down.

Don't worry Aberdeen, I put on 60+ lbs during my time on Paxil, im now down 30 and quite frankly I was very young when I went on it so the other 30 pounds is probably age/eating and the fact that I didn't really start doing exercize until recently.

Just focus on getting well - the rest will come

Re: Weight questions

Half of my Paxil weight fell off slowly in w/d. The other half needed weight watchers. It took me a long time to lose it all.
