Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
Just wondering will the odd glass of wine really be a big deal during withdrawal? not getting drunk or anything...just thinking with weaning so slowly it's such a long time to not be able to have the odd glass

Re: Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
Hi Miranda and welcome to PP. I drank wine while weaning and it didn't present too much of a problem. After I was off totally though I didn't drink anything for over 3 months - was only just getting through the days and didn't dare risk making it worse. Now I have the occassional glass with no problems. I think there are a few folk on here who are still weaning and don't deny themselves a drink now and again.

Re: Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
Thanks for your response. I just think I should try to keep life as normal as possible and not feel like i've restricted my normalness. It's almost like a punishment not to have the odd glass of wine..i'm just talking like a glass of wine on a saturday night, not alot and not every saturday, i'm not a big drinker.

Re: Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
That is an EXCELLENT strategy! A glass of wine is harmless. I'd say have a few sips, take it slow and see how you feel. Sometimes, depending on your particular issues, anything that alters perception can make things a bit worse temporarily, so enjoy your treat keeping in mind that it's SUPPOSED to make you feel different. LOL

Re: Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
I was drinking quite heavily before and during the beginning of my taper and all it did was make me feel like c**p. I quit 13 weeks ago and feel much better for it. Some of the others here have reported that hey will have some depression and anxiety for a few days after some heavier drinking. If you pay attention to how it affects you I don't think shere should be a problem. I have to agree with RangerNY in that keeping your life as normal as possible is a good idea.
Lots of luck on your W/D.

Re: Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
Drew, well I just think I need to carry on as normal as I can!
BrassMonkey, I could definitely see how daily or heavy drinking could make you feel like crap! I will try a glass here and there and see if I feel any different then and or the next day.

Re: Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
I drank on Paxil, off Paxil, and during withdrawal it saved my life! At night some of the terror would ease and the wine really let me enjoy a few moments of sanity before the fear took hold again in the morning. It was a huge help for me.

Re: Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
Yup, I'm mid-wean, have the very occasional glass of wine when I'm out to tea with people, maybe once a month, and never more than a glass. It hasn't seemed to do me any harm so far

well i've kept to my normal ways and all seems great! so i think keeping it normal works for me, but i'm sure excessive drinking would put a spin on my moods

Re: Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
If I have a glass, I'm okay. I have found though that if I have more than one glass, even a glass and a half, it can spin me into a terrible panic attack and I'll be up the whole night. I'm weaning off Lexapro though, not Paxil, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Re: Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
I have treated myself to drinks a few times, and it did not worsen my withdrawal at all- was even calming. I'm not advising anyone to drink, though; just relating my own experience. Please make your decision carefully and with your doctor's knowledge first.

Re: Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
I've been off effexor for like two and a half months and I do go out and have a few sometimes...On the nights I've had more than two to three, I have noticed that the next day I get those brain zaps again..usually not much of an issue anymore...So I say just be aware of it but I agree that it nice to be able to have a nice glass or two of wine...I had three vodka and cranberry last night, woke up feeling amazing

Re: Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
When I was in the lions den of withdrawal stages, I didn't touch a drop of alcohol. That probably lasted about 3 months. After things got better, I experimented with alcohol, but quickly found out that I had to be careful. These days, it's best for me to have an occasional drink or two, but nothing more than that. I'm currently in month 6 of withdrawal. But to be honest, I'm ok with not drinking at all. I actually craved alcohol more while I was on meds, than anytime before or after them. So I really don't miss it very much.
Coffee is another story. I've ultra sensitive to coffee, now. But I did have a love for coffee. :-( If I drink even a cup, now, it triggers my withdrawals for the entire day. No fun at all. Can't even drink half-caf. Only decaff (and I sometimes have to be careful with that). So goodbye, caffeinated coffee.

Re: Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
I haven't altered my drinking any since my taper. I have always went through stages where I want to drink and others where I don't want to at all. This summer I've drank maybe a total of three times. Twice was more then one drink. I haven't noticed a difference. I'm in a wedding in a couple of weeks so I will be drinking more then one that night.

Re: Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
I wouldnt do it. Alcohol is a drug and it brings no good. And why should you provoke it?

Re: Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
I did it! It worked for me. After two weeks alcohol free and with only one previous "good mood" day the whole time, I drank a can of good beer last night and to my surprise I woke up feeling better this morning. These things depend on so many factors that it is hard to decide for ourselves what's best to do, let alone for other people.

Re: Odd Glass of Wine during Withdrawal
Beer had not bothered me until last week. I had 2 and came home and cried like a baby and was full of anxiety. Be careful. I had a couple beers this weekend with no harm done.
