Spent 8 hrs today in the ER.......

DON'T READ THIS POST IF YOU ARE SQUIMSH!!

Yesterday I began to have stomach pains at the top of my stomach that progressively got worse by early morning. Pain began to radiate from the top down to the lower portion of my stomach across my back. I started having diarraha, my stools were white, I did not have any nausea to speak of Needless to say I was up most of the night, early this morning I called my ex-boyfriend who is a nurse, who suggested I go to the ER as my symptoms were related to my bile duct (In March of 2009 I had 3 stones removed from my bile duct).

I had blood work done which was normal, an ultra sound which showed my gallbladder or bile duct had no stones, but showed "sludge". I then had a Hepatobiliary Scintigraphy with Cholecystokinin injection (nuclear test which shows if the gall bladder is actively moving bile), which was normal. I explained my pain to the surgeon as "like the alien movie back in the 70's where the creature came out of the guys stomach". I did get some relief from tylenol. They prescribed me norco (pain medicine - I will not have that filled) and nexium. I am suppose to follow-up with the surgeon in 2 days.

I have lost 30 lbs since February as I no longer eat for a family of four and have tried to eat a balanced diet lower in fat. Should I follow-up with the surgeon or chalk it up as paxil related?

I am so sorry you are going through this. I would follow up with the surgeon so you know one way or the other. Please let me know what you decide and how you make out. I will be thinking of you.

Absolutely follow with the surgeon. A gallbladder filled with sludge can be a problem that needs to be followed.

Re: Spent 8 hrs today in the ER.......

Suzanne,
not sure what to recommend but if you've had issues with your bile duct before, then it is probably not related to withdrawal. I would get multiple opinions from surgeons before going that route...and also inquire whether it can wait until after you are done with witdrawal. Sorry you are having to deal with this while also on wd.

I myself have at least two hernias in the stomach area from my most recent humongous pregnancy belly...I have read that it is usually ok to leave them as is but in some cases may require surgery if there is potential for bowel strangulation. I am totally ignoring them since they do not bother me much except for the rare feeling of bugs crawling over my belly (psychosis maybe? LOL! Not really!). I just could not deal with potential surgery and withdrawal right now...just thinking of having to get anesthesia and pain meds right now really creeps me out.

Anyway, if your condition is not serious I would postpone any surgery...but please get more than one opinion...for some reason I do not trust doctors anymore.

God Bless!

Re: Spent 8 hrs today in the ER.......

Kyle--
PLEASE get it checked out to rule out any physical problems. Many years ago I had severe abdominal pain, the Dr's said I needed to have my gaulbladder removed but the xrays and all came back nagetive, so I put it off. Several months later when I could not bare the pain I had a three pound ganggrean (sp.) gaul bladder removed which through complications needed two more surgeries, three hospitalizations and five years to recover from. I"m not saying that this is your problem too, but have it checked out so you know for sure.

I got all my fingers and toes crossed for ya.

So sorry you're having these difficulties (but glad the other things are going so well).

Do keep monitoring this problem, even if you don't choose to take painkillers they prescribe etc. And let us know how you're doing! My very best to you!

Suzanne,

Stuff like this is hard but w/d added to the mix makes everything seem worse (at least to me)....so I'm inspired by your positive mental state. Thinking of you and sending hugs, Joanne

Re: Spent 8 hrs today in the ER.......Update

I saw my Gastro Doctor today who recommended I have my gallbadder removed, I've had problems dating back to 1996. I have an appointment next week with a surgeon. My only question, will General Ansthesia (sp?) wreck havoc on my tapering schedule and cause more withdrawal symptoms??

On a side note, while filling out forms at the Doctors office, I had to write down all my current medications, current dosage, and reason you were taking the drug. For Paxil, I wrote - STUPIDITY!!

Yes, my sense of humor is returning.....

Re: Spent 8 hrs today in the ER.......

Suzanne-- You wil feel so much better once the gaul bladder is taken out. You'll have to pay attention to your diet for a while after, but if your like me you will be able to eat almost anything pretty soon. You should be able to talk to the anitheseologist (sp.) before hand and tell him/her about the paxil, no garentee that they will understand, but it will raise the question.

I hope all goes smoothly for you.

Best of luck on your surgery! Take it easy and find out about the anesthesia first!

Did you ever have your gallbladder removed? I'm about to lose mine. It will be my first surgery and I'm scared to death about it.

Re: Spent 8 hrs today in the ER.......

Hi Lo--You might not get an answer fro Suzanne, she has been very quiet lately. I had my gaulbladded out many years ago and they have been making great strides in the surgery since then, it is even done as outpatient a lot of times now. It is nothing to be scared of. It will knock the stuffing out of you for a while, but plenty of rest will take care of that. It should go fine. Keep us updated, so we can support.

Re: Spent 8 hrs today in the ER.......

Thanks Brassmonkey. I think the thing that terrifies me most is the thought of ever feeling like I felt during those hellacious withdrawal years. I cannot go back there. I am scared of being knocked back into withdrawal with all the anesthesia and drugs used....all the progress I've made being undone.

But, I also cannot keep living with the feeling of having a football shoved under my right ribs anymore.

Thanks
