BIGGG shock here in my town

I live in one of the largest cities in Holland and we have our own newspaper. And what do i read on the front this morning??

"..Two psychiatrists have to justify themselves for the court cause of malpractice.."

In my town apparently two psychiatrists who kept prescribing lexapro, when a lot of the times it was not needed. They did it because they had some sort of quota in which they got a bonus every time they prescribed a certain amount of lexapro. They earned a lot of money for this

OK this was an excess. But i truly think that more doctors get trips, discounts etc etc when they prescribe more. Off course this was an excess (one prescribed lexapro for a headache). And perhaps not all doctors only think about the money,..but the system is flawed!!

Re: BIGGG shock here in my town

It's so hard to believe that so many doctors are so corrupt!! But the fact that so many of us trust the advice here over the nonsense our doctors bombast is testimony that it is true. Are we all so vulnerable to a system flaw or dose this particular system draw the weak minded? Either way I feel justified in my low opinion of psychiatrist as a species!

Re: BIGGG shock here in my town

I like my GP, but he's uncommonly keen on pill pushing including Paxil pushing. And his shows of incredulity when I tell him I have side effects from taking that medicine are a joy to behold. He totally refuses to engage in speculation that Paxil in moderate doses can do anything negative to the nervous system, although he has no trouble at all lauding its positive effects.

GPs in Japan and many other countries get most of their income from national healthcare systems. For example, I pay a third of the cost of any medical treatment and the Health Ministry chips in two thirds, funded from the decades of "health insurance" premiums I've been paying. The Health Ministry obviously sees SSRIs as a cost-effective treatment from its own standpoint or it would not be allowing, nay advising, doctors to prescribe them so liberally.

Incidentally, in Japan Paxil 5mg tablets are available, but my GP tells me he he still has a big stock of 10mg ones, so when 5mg is called for, his staff break them in half. The halves can be anything between 4.5 and 5.5mg doses. This isn't exactly a "cutting-edge" operation. I prefer to take 10mg pills and do my own cutting with a razor blade.
