skullcap/central sensitization
Hi All
Has anyone tried the herb skullcap whilst tapering from paxil? I seem to be suffering from 'central sensitization', an ongoing cycle of pain - muscle and nerve - that is caused by my CNS being hyperexcitable. This all started after began my taper from paxil in January (currently at 10mg, down from 20mg). I saw my physio today who says that I'm very neurally wound up, and that treatment won't be effective until I get the nervous system calmed down. She's talking to my doctor about getting me on amitryptine, which is out of the question, so I've been reading about natural alternatives and came across the herb skullcap - "Skullcap works as a nervine on the central nervous system (CNS). It supports the CNS making it helpful for stress, “mind chatter”, exhaustion and relaxing nervous tension. As a brain tonic Skullcap is useful to calm the mind. It is good for nervous system issues of a chronic or mild nature such as fear, nervous headaches, depression and abnormal sensitivities to light and touch. Skullcap combines well with Chamomile, Valerian or Passion Flower for the nervous system. As a mild sedative it is useful in relieving insomnia and encouraging a natural sleep. It can help with the pain associated with multiple sclerosis or sciatica. Skullcap is also helpful for menstrual cramps and PMS. Skullcap is excellent to use when weaning from addictions. Use it with American Ginseng and Wild Oats in frequent doses (every one to two hours) to help withdrawals from barbiturates, valium, and alcoholism." Has anyone tried it?? Any other ideas for desensitizing the CNS. I really don't want my paxil withdrawal to turn into a chronic pain situation! |

Re: skullcap/central sensitization
My herbal teacher always said skullcap was good for drug withdrawals. Although I didnt know that at the time I withdrew from Paxil and never tried it when I was in withdrawal. Now I take it occasionally for migraines.
Here's more info on it.: http://naturalmedicinesofnc.org/Skul...kullcap-cg.pdf
