Re: The Miracle Of Magnesium
I don't know about the second question, but there's no reason not to start taking it now.

Re: The Miracle Of Magnesium
Thanks, Kim! I think I'll start out on a low 250 mg dose. I've heard it can cause some bowel trouble...that's the last thing is need! After all, wouldn't Milk of Magnesia have mag in it??

Re: The Miracle Of Magnesium
here is a little something I found on pubmed. Mg appears to be useful in reducing anxiety or depression disorders.
Neuropharmacology. 2004 Dec;47(8 ):1189-97 Magnesium-deficient diet alters depression- and anxiety-related behavior in mice--influence of desipramine and Hypericum perforatum extract. Singewald N, Sinner C, Hetzenauer A, Sartori SB, Murck H. Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Institute of Pharmacy and CMBI, Leopold-Franzens-University of Innsbruck, Peter-Mayr-Str. 1, A-6020 Innsbruck, Austria. A relation between magnesium (Mg) status and mood disorders has been suggested, but evidence remains inconsistent. Therefore, we examined in mice whether Mg-depletion would alter behavior evaluated in established animal models of depression and anxiety and whether these effects would be sensitive to antidepressants. Compared to control mice fed with normal diet, mice receiving a low Mg diet (10% of daily requirement) for several weeks displayed increased immobility time in the forced swim test, indicating enhanced depression-like behavior. In addition, the partial Mg-depletion increased anxiety-related behavior in the light/dark and open field test, while locomotor activity or motor coordination was not influenced. Chronic oral administration of desipramine (30 mg/kg/day), or Hypericum extract LI160 (Hyp, 380 mg/kg/day) prevented the "pro-depression-like" forced swim behavior in Mg-depleted mice. Furthermore, the increase in anxiety-related behavior of Mg-depleted mice was abolished in both the open field and light dark test by Hyp. Taken together, we report that Mg-depletion leads to enhanced depression- and anxiety-related behavior in mice, which was further validated by the reversibility of the behavioral changes by known antidepressant and anxiolytic substances. Further, the utility of Mg-depletion as a new screening model for clinically active antidepressant and anxiolytic drugs is suggested. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...ubmed_DocSu m |

Re: The Miracle Of Magnesium
That is absolutely correct! If you look at the supplements page, we really advocate the use of supplements, such as mag, omega 3...etc, instead of drugs. There are several members who have successfully tapered off SSRIs and are finding great relief with these supplements. I know it's what I intend on doing.

Re: The Miracle Of Magnesium
Laurie, there is no reason why you shouldn't take mag now....start with the lowest dose possible and see how it sits with you after a couple of weeks....if you have no bowel trouble, work your way up until you've reached bowel tolerance...I'm up to 600mgs a day....not everday but I try my best....it has immensely helped during my WD from Paxhell....

Re: The Miracle Of Magnesium
I have to say this stuff stops my w/dr symptoms in their tracks! I have only been on it under a week, and it causes major indigestion for me, but it is stopping the paxil w/dr and helps me sleep so I'll take it! I found an ionic liquid form that is awesome.

Re: The Miracle Of Magnesium
I'm off to the Health Food Star this afternoon to get some magnesium citrate, maybe I will be able to tolerate it more easily.

Re: The Miracle Of Magnesium
400mg or if you are using liquid 4 ml. I would start lower though and work your way up. Mag has been known to cause indigestion.

Re: The Miracle Of Magnesium
make sure you get an absorbable kind, not the oxide that is everywhere because it's cheapest. I use citrate but i also heard glycinate is good.

Re: The Miracle Of Magnesium
I found the liquid form and found it more tolerable. It is mixed with calcium and vitamin D.

Re: The Miracle Of Magnesium
Alto- thank you for that info. It is encouraging to know that there is somthing other than Rx that can help with anxiety and depression. My problem is mostly anxiety. I am taking 150mg of Effexor currently. I hate it but it's better than being panic and depressed (still have slight issues). It is interesting to know how magnesium affects the neurons. I also drink alot of milk (1qt/day) which could mean I need more magnesium since calcium and mag offset each other.
