Re: The Miracle Of Magnesium

I have had some weird responses with magnesium citrate powder, roughly 100mg, and some drops of water. I usually put the magnesium in a water bottle and then add water and I then shake it up to mix it. I then sip the water over a period of time usually 15 minutes. It helps, it feels good and does alot. Relaxes me helps me sleep helps W/D. My blood pressure seems lower. Etc.

Anyway the last time I did this i took a water bottle and added the magnesium. I got sidetracked with a phone call and didn't add the water. But the bottle had a few drops of water left in it.

Anyway, the bottle got really really hot and melted a bit. I was shocked.

I have since duplicated this in dixie cups, glass cups, plastic cups. I wanted to determine if it was the plastic or not. I also used bottled water, tap water etc. I can get it to work everytime. Its almost like you take just enough water to allow the magnesium to dissolve. Take 100mg about 1/4 a teaspoon and then add about 1/8 a teaspoon of water. Put it in a cup and swish it around for a bit and then tilt the cup so its a nice little puddle. Give it a minute and watch it heat up. It will feel hot on the outside of the glass and it will bubble up.

I believe its releasing hydrogen and this is causing the reaction, but its just a guess.

My worry is, this stuff is fantastic. But is this good for the body if this is its reaction? Is it ok to continue taking? I have taken this for a month now and I would hate to not use it.

Many times I have spilled a little bit of the powder on the counter as i mix it and I always take my finger and put the fallen powder on my tongue. It tastes like lemon. But now I don't know if its a good idea.

Needless to say I want to suspend my use until I know exactly what is going on with this magnesium. I hope its normal and when diluted not a factor and I hope I can continue my use of it.

Anyone know what is going on? Try it out, see if you get it to react like this. It gets really hot, so be careful.

I take it in pill form with various types of magnesium in it, all allowing for excellent absorption - the way you are talking does seem scarry

Scott ~
that is a good link - i've read that ~ it is Really good, thank you - but didnt see anything specifically about Valerian? I suppose its just herbs in general huh? ~ well at any rate the valerian does not seem to help at all with my sleep disturbance - which is what i originally got it to try. I did also try it for a particularly distressing day (which you quoted) but thank goodness there have been no more days like that.
Thank you so much for your input - this site is a true blessing ~

i didn't mean to say that you shouldn't take valerian at all by suggesting the ssri link.. i just knew it had some info that would help you. If it helps take it but the best thing is to let time heal. I went through a lot of things looking for what would help and wound up ditching everything but magnesium.

Ive started taking magnesium a few days ago, how long before you feel any benefit? I feel pretty good as it is but i thought I would give it a try in my health plan.

Re: The Miracle Of Magnesium

I think this is more indicative of plastic bottles being hazardous then the magnesium itself, besides magnesium is found in everyday foods - plastics should not

I drink it in a glass.

Re: The Miracle Of Magnesium

Most here have done extensive research regarding magnesium. Diarrhea is a very common side effect and one everyone is aware of, but you'd have to take a TON of magnesium for it to be toxic and I don't believe anyone here is even close to that. Any vitamin or supplement, when taken in very high doses, can be toxic.

I found this out the hard way as after taking 500mg of Magnesium Oxide every night for over a month I developed an irregular heartbeat which was extremely distressing. After a doctor's visit and a few test I was doing some reading on the internet about my condition and one of the online sources happened to mention magnesium. I mentioned it to my doctor who told me to stop taking it and see if there was any improvement. Within a few days my heartbeat returned to normal.

Unfortunately, stopping magnesium led to a return of my anxiety and the insomnia that I was taking it for in the first place. I've found that Calms Forte helps with the anxiety and I am currently having good success with benadryl and melatonin for the insomnia. Also aerobic exercise is great for anxiety and mood swings.

I recently started taking magnesium again but rather sparingly. I take about 250mg every few nights.

400mg for men, 300 for women. You can actually take more than this and I know of some people that take twice that much but I wouldn't. When I spoke to a neurologist about taking magnesium he told me that taking it as directed on the bottle was fine and that the only thing he warns people against is taking too much of any supplement. So if you are already getting a LOT of magnesium in your food you might want to take less depending on how much you are already getting.

Your post is a bit old so I assume you've already started taking the calcium. 1000mg is high to start but won't do any harm. It's just a matter of your body tolerating it or not.

Re: The Miracle Of Magnesium

A dose of 400mg of Magnesium Citrate would provide you with what you need for the day.

Start at a low dose and see how it goes. Bodies don't react the same way in withdrawal.
