newbie to researching supplements update

After feeling pretty overwhelmed and intimidated by the many excellent listings of supplements available on this site, it seemed a good idea to put out some effort of my own to help satisfy my own natural curiousity about everything and tackle the aforementioned feelings of overwhelmed and intimidated. The first step in this process involved speaking with my late husband's sister who accidentally became involved in everything homeopathic and natural in the 60s. Since she's not been on any meds except insulin for forty years, and a bit...flighty...I thought I'd best double check all information before actually consuming anything. Lucky, me, she told me about a 30-year-old with my same name (!) who has experience with Paxil WD and who has worked in the supp's department at Whole Foods for several years.

This good young woman recommended I get some kind of exercise at least three x a week; take a B stress complex; and take DHA.

I also logged onto USANA nutrition this am and got the following list after responding to the personalized guide:

Strongly Recommended;
Essentials
Proflavanol or Proflavanol 90
OptOmega or BiOmega-3
Fibergy or Fibergy Bar
Active Calcium

The problem with this cyber-aide is that there is no way to advise "withdrawing from Paxil." The closest I came was fudging by saying I'm experiencing menopausal hot flashes.

But I got the idea to go to USANA from (one of or the?) founder of the drugawareness.org website. Her name is Anne Blake Tracy, Ph.D. at <http://members.aol.com/atracyphd/syndrome.htm>. The reason I'm leaning toward Phud Tracey for guidance is because of her early and ongoing involvement with SSRI side effects.

Recommendations from her website also mention Noni Juice, the name of which so perfectly matches the way I feel that I'm tempted to look into stock options.

Also recommended is something called Young Living, which seems to be based on essential oils.

To sum up, my question is: please question/comment/advise on the following list of supp's:

~B stress vitamins
~DHA (Nordil Naturals--sp?)
~Essentials
~Proflavanol or Proflavanol 90
~OptOmega or BiOmega-3
~Fibergy or Fibergy Bar
~Active Calcium
~Noni Juice

Thank you all!!!!

p.s. just to fill you in on how I feel today, it took me forty minutes to write this missive...had to proof extra for typos and disconnectedness. Hope it's now legible!

Re: newbie to researching supplements update

Susu, one of the list that you provided I am taking.

It's liquid Cod Liver Oil by Nordic Naturals, it's got loads of DHA and EPA. My naturopathic doc recommended it for me and it works. She told me that it works for depression and as well as for seasonal affective disorder. (not much sun out here in Canada in the winter time)

Re: newbie to researching supplements update

Susu...sorry you are feeling bad today...feeling kinda crappy myself...

Dr. Tracy is the Director of DrugAwareness.org

You will find a Thread about her CD' "Help I can't get off my anti-depressant" which is on this site... There is a lot of good information contained there...although not all that was on the CD...as it just became to much to take all the notes...

I'd say the part that was most left off was the part about supplements...

I can tell you a few things however...
Nordac Naturals is just the brand name for Fish Oil...

DHA is the part of the Fish oil that is most beneficial component that helps depression...However it also contains EPA..

Noni Juice is excellent for pain...and is suppose to be beneficial in boosting the immune system, fighting inflamation, decreasing the depersonalization that comes in withdrawal, and is a natual pain reducer...75% as effective as morphine for pain.

Fiber is great...keeps the bowels moving and pulls out toxins...However I'd use Psyllium or Glucomannin (Sp?) before I'd be using some kind of Fiber bar...but that's just me...

The opti omega things you mentioned just sounds like more on Omega 3's/Fish oil...but may contain, some Omega 6 and 9's as well...I don't have any knowledge of this product...but simply know that the brain is made up of Fats, Lipids and Oils of which these Omega's contain...

However with that said...to get the best brain balance it is best to limit the 6's except for Borage oil...and I would suggest you read the other threads on this forum about Omega 3's for a full understanding.

It is now believed that it is the change in diet in the last 100 years that has caused the increase in depression..specifically the balance between the Omega 6 and 3 ratio...

Calcium is good but you need to read the thread on Magnesium to understand that we also have a ratio problem between the Calcium to Mag...getting 4 to 6 times more Calcium than magnesium...when the ratio need to be 1 to 1..

I'll stop here and let others give you their thoughts,
Darlene

I forgot to mention about the Young Living Essential oils...

Yes, she suggest taking the Francensence and mixing it with almond oil or sesame oil etc...and putting under your arms like deodorant saying that it will help reduce the risk of Breast Cancer...as the AD's increase the risk..

Re: newbie to researching supplements update

Susu, what are the specific things going on with you that supplements may help with? I know that Dr. Tracey and others here are knowledgeable about supplements, but everyone's needs are different. Becuase of this, much of your success may be through trial and error to find what works for you. Unfortunately this can get expensive and wasteful. I have a cabinet full of stuff I don't take because it either didn't work or I didn't get good results. I don't know anyone exploring the wonderful world of supplemts who hasn't experienced this.

Reading certain books about nutrition and supplements has really helped me find the supplements that I need and that really work for me.This is a rundown on what I've read in the last year: Balance Your Brain, Balance Your Life; the Edge Effect, the Maker's Diet, Neil Walsh on Holistic LIving, Inflammation Nation. One thing these all have in common are supplements, ranging from fish oil to some really obscure things that I am still afraid to try. But they discuss specific things that I can relate to and make specific recommendations for the things that are bothering me. I now have a "stack" of about 6 or 7 things I have narrowed down as a result of my experimentation. They work so well, that I can say it has all been worth it.
