I don't want to gross anyone out, but....

....for the last few days, I have had diarrhea. I read that Paxil causes that, but I've been on Paxil for seven years, and why would it start just now? I've read the other side affects for all of the other drugs that I am on, and Paxil was the only one with the side affect of diarrhea. I've had diarrhea sometimes in the past seven years, but I thought it was always food related.

My question is that if I can expierience a side affect for the first time after being on the drug for 7 years?

Bern, diarrhea can be caused by numerous things, it is possible you have simply picked up a virus.

There's a gastrointestinal virus making it's way around NJ.

I think that perhaps it is possible to get a side affect suddenly. I have been on Paxil for about 3 years and only resently started having hives all the time. And thanks to someone else with the same problem....found out that it was my Paxil causing them!

Then it's probably a virus or something. I hardly get viruses or colds. I always consider myself pretty healthy despite my mental illness. I hardly get sick.

Re: I don't want to gross anyone out, but....

Interesting (to me) that you bring that up. I had been taking Paxil 7 months or so. One day suddenly I started having diarrhea. I was at the ocean, so I figured I had picked up a parasite or virus or something and went to the doctor later. The diarrhea did not stop for the next 4 months. A friend even commented on the vast amount of toilet paper I was using. The septic tank backed up with all the paper and the landlord had to call the pumper guy, and in the meantime discovered that the pipes, etc. had to be repaired anyway (my diarrhea was an expensive proposition for the landlord, to say the least). Finally at the end of January I got the flu along with its vomiting and diarrhea. Because of the vomiting, I stopped taking the evil drug and never went back. Doncha know that when I got well from the flu, off Paxil the chronic diarrhea stopped!

As was said, viruses, etc. can cause this. But don't discount Paxil as the cause. One way to find out - stop taking it.
