my saga : the psychiatrists strike back
hi!
well, I am going to the psychiatrist next week... I will need to be really prepared because the last 2 doctors I saw were really bad (see genevieve's saga part 1 and 2). The idea is to get therapy/services, some financial help and (I am not sure) meds. The last time I saw a psychiatrist was in... 1999. Always had a problem with them... I am too smart for them and they dont like wise young women I am going to bring my boyfriend with me because with their "you are so bad you need drugs right now and I know what I am doing dont question it" attitude I just feel terrible when I see them. any advice for a meeting with those nice drug pushers?

Re: my saga : the psychiatrists strike back
If you can't just tell them "no" on medication, then get a list of what they are proposing and do a ton of research. Take every last question you come up with about side effects, withdrawal, time limits, etc...and make them answer those question - and then make them show you PROOF of those answers. We've all see what the "'cuz I said so" route does to us, so don't let it happen to you again. Make sure that there is a plan in place for there to be a time when you will be able to come off of the medications having learned new coping strategies or alternative treatments. Be sure to take a list of different options YOU know about and make them think about those also.
In summary, you stay in control. Make sure YOU are the one who has to be answered to for something not working, not letting the blame ever be put on you. Good luck! |

Re: my saga : the psychiatrists strike back
Additionally, just know what YOU want from the psychiatrist prior to going in. Remember they're getting paid by you or by the insurer and they're in YOUR SERVICE.
It's the hesitant patient who gets "hooked" with a treatment you didn't want in the first place.

Re: my saga : the psychiatrists strike back
Maybe you will get a good one this time. I'm on number three and I met with here once and told her what I wanted and she agreed. She doesn't do therapy, and I didn't want it. I've had a lot of therapy, some of it harmful and some of it very good. She is young and she knows about Paxil. I did take my husband with me also. Good Luck
