i have another question...

First i want to say that im so glad i found all of you. I think you have kept me sane the past few nights. OK, my question is this, i have been on the paxil for 3 days now, pluse 2 xanaxs a day one in AM and 1 in PM. I woke up this morning and besides a mild headache i feel wonderful.....thats a first!!! Anyway, after reading all your posts, i have decided that i am going to make me an appt with a counscler, i think i will continue the paxil for at least the first month, and then after talking to the counscler, go off of it. I really dont want meds if i can do this myself. Do you all think that is an OK plan?

Thanks for taking time to help me,
Joy

The counselor idea is a good one. However, the longer you stay on Paxil the harder to get off - can you start a super-slow taper until you are sure of what you want to do? You dd not say how much you are taking.

Re: i have another question...

Your situation sounds very similar to mine. I had stress building for the better part of a year that developed in to panic attacks, some very severe. I started on 20 mg Paxi, and used the Xanax until the Paxil "kicked in". I only took the Xanax when I felt an attack coming on - I was not on a regular dose. While 20 mg of Paxil is low, I wish I would have taken only 10 mg. I also started therapy during this (therapist did not recommend the drugs, it was my doctor). IMO, therapy is more useful than the drugs, although the Xanax did help me get through some hard days.

I have weened to 5 mg of Paxi from 20mg over the last 6 weeks, and hope to be off within a couple of more with no serious side effects. I was on it originally for 2 1/2 months before I started to ween.

I think I could have gotten by without the Paxil, using the therapy and Xanax. If I was you I would try to go without the Paxil or maybe consider lowering the dose to 10mg.

Re: i have another question...

yes jimbo, we sound very similar. Well i did make me and appt with a councler. I go today at 2;30. I guess i will take the paxil i have for this month and then on my next refil i will go down to the 10 and then to 5 and then hopefully i can handel this with councling and the xanax on a need to be basis. Doses this sound good? also when you all first startrd paxil did it make you feel nervous and jettery? I feel better panic wise, but im nervous and jettery.
Thanks,
Joy

Re: i have another question...

I think the Paxil actually made me worse in the beginning! I was very nervous and edgy - I couldn't sit still at my desk. I could actually feel the attacks coming on. I think I needed the Xanax to help with the paxil. Some here have suggested weening on paxil (as well as weening off). The edgy feeling subsided due to therapy and the paxil kicking in, which took several weeks.

Make sure you discuss your treatment with your doctor. Are you seeing a psychologist or psychiratrist? The latter tend to push more drugs, the former (at least mine) then to shun them since they cannot prescribe meds.
