HELP! Friend's kid being put on drug ferris wheel.
Hi,
I'm writing in behalf a a friend this time. I owed her some money and I asked how her kids were - she's been having a tough time. Short story, they gave her 16 yo lexapro a couple of months ago and she figured out it was making her mean (but seemed to help the depression), so 10 days ago the shink puts her on Resperdal. When I heard this I said, that's some serious stuff, you got to get her off that stuff. Anyway, I told her I'd talk to you guys, especially scotty and Rita. I told her I was given one dose of the resperdal and went sort of nuts. She said her daughter says she feels like killing someone and her skin feels like it's crawling. They're going to pull her out of school and get her some homeschooling. I told her she has to get her off this stuff. The family has been through a lot, divorce, etc. Her 14 yo daughter is on lexapro and some other med for panic attacks. Mom is on something too. She wanted to take the older daughter off the Resperdal but I dont know if she can do it cold turkey. I told her I'd do some checking. She was going to half the lexapro but I told her to quarter it first. She's on 10 mg. of Lexapro which for a skinny teen seems like a lot to me.

This is the Lexapro! It takes a few months before you start to see the "meaness" start. That is if they make it past the suicidal part. I would NOT give Risperal and would wean her quickly off the Lexapro, but I'll talk to you later.

Re: HELP! Friend's kid being put on drug ferris wheel.
Hope, resperidal is a horrible horrible med. Skye was on it only a very short time. Moods worse, huge weight gain in a matter of a few weeks, and she lost bladder control. I am assuming we are talking about the same med. Anyway, get the mom to visit here.

Re: HELP! Friend's kid being put on drug ferris wheel.
Hope God bless your friend and her daughter. She definately should take her to another doctor. Resperidal is an anti-paychotic as far as I know. It sounds like intervention is needed immediately.

Re: HELP! Friend's kid being put on drug ferris wheel.
I printed the info off the web on respirdal and lexapro and gave it my friend along with Scotty's #. Mom was on her way out but daughter was home so I asked if I could go and chat with her. Mom said fine. I stayed there a couple of hours. The poor kid was totally doped out. Big dark rings under her eyes. She and I had a long talk and she opened up to me quite a bit. Turns out she was on seroquel before the respirdal but it gave her muscle aches. She's going to be homeschooled for a while and I told her I'd pick her up tomorrow and she could spend some time with me while mom was at work. She said Cool.
I feel kind of scared because I've never actually helped anyone but myself come off this ****. Thanks all.

Demand that the doctor explain the negative side effects to these medications. We went down the same road and were never told about any of it.

Re: HELP! Friend's kid being put on drug ferris wheel.
Diane, this kid is following the classic pattern of psychiatry! Seroquel is the "second in" drug when they start having a reaction to the ssri. Then when they get psychotic with the Seroquel they add Risperdal to control the psychosis. Diane, the best thing you can do is to just be there for this poor child and have her mother come here or call me. Sometimes hearing it from a Mom who has witnessed it in their child can make an impression. Be there for her and tell her that she's NOT crazy!! Let her know that she's also welcome to come here and post or just read. Jeez, you weren't kidding when you said she has entered the merry go round! This is the same course of drugs that Skye and Chantal were given. I'm working tomorrow, but I'll be home late afternoon.

Re: HELP! Friend's kid being put on drug ferris wheel.
I talked to mom. Mom isn't giving her the Risperdal tonight. She is going to taper her off the lexapro. Her other younger daughter is on Lexapro and has been getting mean too - according to mom. The younger daughter is on Lexapro and Hydroxyz HCL. Never heard of the Hydroxyz HCL. This is for Panic Attacks. Mom has cut her lexapro in half as well. She said she's going to try to get her kids off the stuff. The family went through a bad divorce several years ago and since then she said it's been hell on the whole family. She had to go to work. Mom is so stressed out. Thanks Scotty, I told mom everything you told me and I had a long talk with the older daughter. She's going to hang out with me tomorrow. Mom said her mood brightened and wants me to talk to the younger daughter as well. Mom talked to my teenage son all the time. (She was also his boss.) So I told her I guess it's my turn. Mom asked me how come her daughter talked to me and wouldn't open up to her. I replied, How come my son opened up to you and not to me???
thank you everyone.

Re: HELP! Friend's kid being put on drug ferris wheel.
You two are wonderful. Yes Laurie you are right it is saving a child's life. Dear God, where are these doctors coming from. I guess it should be blamed on our governments, who are responsible for it being on the market for children.
You are both very unselfish people, who are giving of yourselves to help others. Its a pleasure to know you, even if it's on a board. eileen

Re: HELP! Friend's kid being put on drug ferris wheel.
Good for you Hope! Sending hugs your way, you have saved this child from much grief. The next part of the journey will be hard, seeing the daughter's withdrawal will have the mom questioning if she is doing the right thing. You are going to have to stay close to them.

Re: HELP! Friend's kid being put on drug ferris wheel.
I ordered Rita's book and "The Antidepressant Solution" and I'm going to show her Darcy's book too. (I'm feeling kind of stingy with Darcy's book since it has me listed in the dedication.
Thanks everyone for all your prayers and help. I'll keep you posted.

Re: HELP! Friend's kid being put on drug ferris wheel.
Diane, let her know that sleep is very common and not to be upset by it. Darcy told me when Ryan was going through this that "withdrawal is exhausting, let the boy sleep". Truer words were never spoken.

Re: HELP! Friend's kid being put on drug ferris wheel.
My friend said her computer isn't working right now so she can't get online. I was at the health food store (my home away from home) and I called her and asked if she wanted me to pick up some fish oil - which I did. I picked up a hefty one. I'll let her know more about the sleep.

Like it's not bad enough using this stuff in kids, but to then put them on a full adult dose is criminal
