Re: Babies and Lexepro

Unbelievable!! Tell her to google information on this before continuing. As far as I am concerned an ssri is an ssri, warnings have just started coming out.

This is from Healthyplace.com: Currently there are no adequate and well-controlled studies of LEXAPRO in pregnant women; therefore, LEXAPRO (escitalopram) should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit to the woman justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

I'd say at the very least the baby is in danger of suffering withdrawal after it's born. Not to mention the ptoential risk the mother could pose by virtue of being on an SSRI.

Re: Babies and Lexepro

I assume your "&" was supposed to be a "7"? 2 months of Lexapro crossing the placenta would definitely put the baby in danger of withdrawal symptoms. I also have to wonder if it would not possibly slow down propering maturing of certain organs of the baby knowing what it does to us adults.

Tell her to slap the doctor. That in itself should relieve some anxiety.

Re: Babies and Lexepro

This is just mind blowing, that a doctor has so little knowledge about this. Who the heck decided that pregnancy should be stress free?????? This is malpractice!!

I think it's natural to feel nervous about an up coming birth but it doesn't warrent taking a drug. She needs to see someone who will reassure her everything will be alright. Gosh, the hard part is after the birth - the next 18 years.

Re: Babies and Lexepro

Actually, the person who should be reassuring her is her doctor. That's his role isn't it?

Re: Babies and Lexepro

Yes, it is his role! How about referring her to a support group for pregnant Mom's, offering her some good books on coping with pregancy etc... Nope, easier to write a prescription! He probably has NO idea that ssri's have just had a upgraded warning for pregnant women. Once again.. the pharma rep didn't tell him!!! Heck, my OB wouldn't even let me take tylenol with the warning" We just don't know how these drugs act on a fetus, so why chance it". Now that's the kind of advice that should be given.

Re: Babies and Lexepro

Joy,

Pregnancy/birth and the rest of her life will be full of stress. That is the package of becoming a parent.

She has to deal with it in other ways besides drugs and her doctor is an idiot for perscribing that.

I have had friends and relatives who wouldn't even go a mile near anything they felt would harm the baby....

Crazy.
