I engaged in talk therapy before treatment but not during....my doc said I didn't need to have psychotherapy anymore because the pills would help more than anything else.....right!

Re: Poll: Talk Therapy

Ryan did not have talk therapy while on paxil,"Teens don't do well in therapy" was his psychiatrists comment. He did see a psychologist at the beginning of weaning for about 2 months, but the psychologist felt that he was to "altered" to get anything from it. He restarted after weaning was completed and continued until month 8 off paxil. The psychologist was available by phone throughout the whole process.

That's ok Laurie, I had trouble getting the poll up -- but it's my lack of computer skills I'm sure!

Re: Poll: Talk Therapy

I started talk therapy about six months after starting Paxil, and continued for almost a year. My therapist and I agreed that I had reached a point where it was okay to stop, but she recommended that I continue taking Paxil for the rest of my life because of my history of anxiety and depression.

Re: Poll: Talk Therapy

I'm doing both. My therapist doesn't want to "talk" about my problems until we find the right medication. I guess I may need a new therapist!

I started after Paxil. While still taking it, I thought I was fine!

Re: Poll: Talk Therapy

I was engaged in talk therapy for 5 months. She was kind and seemed to really care.I felt uncomfotable though because her office was a waiting room in a hospital and non conducive because of the bright light always sensitive to and people coming in and out.I have never been to a psycholgist, naive again. It was like talking to a friendly person but with no insight what I should do.She kept saying let it go,how do I let my whole family go,its all I've ever known and loved. Then she suggesting anti depressents plus therapy they go together.Once the psychitrist gave me the anti depressents and they kicked in zombie like I had nothing more to say. There is no answer I believe in anything anymore. She also kept indicating that I was a multiple persoanlity due to child molestation.Hey if I am its better then being alone.

Re: Poll: Talk Therapy

Desolit, find another therapist. Give it a second chance. No therapist should be operating in a waiting room, for crying out loud. The parking lot would have been more private. And multiple personality disorder??? Pffft! That condition is extremely rare, regardless of what we hear on TV talk shows. And it certainly could not be diagnosed by a therapist who doesn't even have a proper office. Sorry, but that just blows me away. I've been to a few shrinks in my life, and the one thing that all of their offices had in common was soundproofing. I hope you find someone else to work with. Considering the family problems you're dealing with, you could really benefit from proper therapy.

Re: Poll: Talk Therapy

Desolit, that's so funny that you mentioned the environment. Ryan's psychologist was in a very old building. It was like walking into someones home. It made a BIG difference for Ryan. He never scheduled appts so close together that you were in the waiting room with anyone else. Really nice environment.

You were not naive; she was supposed to be the professional, not you. But, she does sound like she had very little experience. Yes, letting go is good, but it takes a lot of personal work and working with a very wise and experienced therapist to understand how that really works. There are answers, but they come with working with someone who has been where you are and come through it and has the professional expertise to guide you through it.

If a therapist is good, you do get answers out of it. But they are your own answers which a therapist helps you discover.

If you are near a university, call the psychology department and inquire about post graduate programs in psychoanalysis. The Psychoanalytic Institute has programs that have supervision of doctoral students at universities who have already gotten their doctorate and provide counseling under supervision at low cost. You may be aware of it already, but there is a very good board on WebMD for sexual abuse.
