started withdrawal on my own

started withdrawal on my own from 25mg of paxil cr 6 days ago. went to 3/4 of a pill so down to 18.75. I tried several months ago to go from 25 to 12.5 and got very sick after about 6-7 days. I have a couple of questions:

Does the withdrawal affect mood so that you could lose your temper very easily? Can this happen as soon as 6 days after reducing dosage?

I am starting to have some nausea and moderate to severe headaches which I experienced last time. However, they are bearable right now whereas when I cut the dose in half they were not.

Can some one help me understand the effect on mood or if they have had similar experiences, let me know. This is the first time I have posted since January, but I am so tired and wiped out all the time I decided it had to be the paxil. I had some issues with severe depression but through therapy I feel much better now and I am ready to get back to a more normal life. My Doc says it is the depression that is making me tired and not the paxil. But I no longer feel depressed and I am ready to get on with LIVING so in my mind it has to be the paxil. Please - comments??
Thanks
Ringo

Re: started withdrawal on my own

Withdrawal effects every aspect of your mood and too many physical aspects to go into in one post. My fuse was never as short as it was during withdrawal. Increased was anxiety, depression, anger, new symptoms of major agoraphobia. Were any of your symptoms you experienced before Paxil as bad as they are now? Most likely not. Points straight at the drug.

I came down with the Paxil-flu within 2 days. My anger-management was out the door within the week.

Paxil made me incredibly sleepy. I continued to have to take naps during withdrawal because my body was so messed up trying to correct itself from what Paxil had done to it.

It takes quite a while, although there is no specific time frame, but it does get better with time. No one has ever had a Paxil-deficiency. Continue with your small drops, stabilizing each time and only dropping when you are ready. The day will come when you think to yourself, "Wow. Hi, me!"

Congratulations on your beginning and best wishes for strength, patience and recovery as soon as possible!

Re: started withdrawal on my own

Ringo,
I remember your previous posts...
Many people experience mood changes when tapering and after stopping: anger/rage is very common. Also: sadness, depression, anxiety and more. But also positive changes: being able to enjoy colors, laughter, and music. These changes can happen within a day, a few days, or weeks. Or months. For some, the emotional roller-coaster is worse than the physical symptoms. There is really no way to tell what your own personal experience will be. BUT, it's a pretty sure bet that someone on these boards will have had, or are having an experience similar to yours. That's why coming here often and posting can be so therapeutic. You will never be alone here.
Best of luck,
Kathryn

Mood swings?? Nooooooooooooo..................more like mood GIANT TRAPEZES!!!! The anger/rage were the worst for me. I'm still very short fused. If something makes me mad, I totally lose control and snap my head off at them. I have to say though its getting much better than it was in the beginning. Hang in there. This is a bumpy ride but the bumps get less and less. Just continue the very slow taper and be as patient as you can with yourself.

I actually haven't lost it on anyone, yet.

What I have to do waaaaaay more often though is stop myself before I open my mouth. (or put fingers to keyboard.)

When on Paxil, I would just sorta cruise, and nothing much would bother me.

That is no longer the case. (even though I'm not fully off of it, yet. )

I'm much more 'quick tempered.' Actually, every emotion is much closer, if that makes any sense.

Another thing is that I can no longer trust my guideposts, and have to do 'reality checks' with others far more often than I used to. (Like having to ask my wife: Was it appropriate and reasonable to be really pissed off in said situation.)

So.... you're definitely not alone.

You're doing much better than I am in this regard. I don't even ask if it was appropriate......................I just let it rip and then regret it later. I've cried lots and lots about that "loss of control." Maybe I should say affirmations every morning "I have control of my anger, I have control of my anger, I have control of my anger."

Re: started withdrawal on my own

Paxil and withdrawal can induce a lethargy that is quite unlike depression lethargy...A depression lethargy is more of a "fed up" feeling, but paxil lethargy is all consuming, you literally feel "brain dead"...

Personally i think its a kind of adrenal burn out...but who knows?...Paxil can cause all sorts of problems....

Re: started withdrawal on my own

just wanted to say thanks for all those who replied. i lost it at work twice today, really lost control of my temper over basically nothing, but it was about things and not at someone so that is good i guess. i have been cruising on paxil for the last 9 months and i am tired of the cruise. i wasn't sure what to expect other than the nausea, headaches and physical stuff. So i probably will be posting more looking for support and hopefully as time goes by offering support to others.

I am weaning against my doctor's wishes as he said i need a few more months on this stuff but i want to "feel" again if that makes any sense???? we have discussed it and I had asked for 12.5 mg CR to make the dosage drops less but he has not come through with that. So I am stuck at dropping down at 6.25 mgs (1/4 of pill).

By the way, Happy Father's day to everyone out there. I have two son's who have been very supportive of me in the last year and I have mellowed through therapy and have become a better Fathert. I have a feeling I may return to my old ways at times during the withdrawal - short tempered, impatient, angry, etc. Do I need to let them know that I am doing this and that these emotions are temporary? They are temporary aren't they??????

Thanks
Ringo

Re: started withdrawal on my own

Yes Ringo, they are temporary and they will pass. I'm on Paxil well over ten years and my doc told me a few more months. I knew he would never prescribe for me to get off and I got a new doc. I'm going very slowly after so long and I have lost my temper before WD and in WD. My husband told me it was all justified. Good Luck on your journey.

Re: started withdrawal on my own

I lost my temper all the time in withdrawal. It's very normal. Yes, I think you should speak to your sons and let them know what you're going through, that you may get angry but it's not their fault and it will get better. Children tend to think everything is their fault so it's important to let them know this is body chemistry, not them. Good for you for deciding to get off Paxil, and your doctor sounds like a jerk.

Really excellent idea! It always helps to keep our loved one's 'in the loop.'
