Feel like such a failure

Hi:
I have tried so hard to not raise my dosage of paxil again but I am just too sick. It is very difficult to go backwards with no guarantee of reaching a stabler state but I have to give it a try. My psychiatrist is on board but I don't know if I have the stamina to go through this long grueling process as I will have to wean so slowly. I'm done crying my eyes out for this evening and hope to stay out of the hospital. One more question, is your brain healing during the weaning process or only when you are done?

Taken off of parnate and put on Olanzapine, valium, effexor, remeron, gabapentin and laterally paxil. Sent home totally unwell. 5 months later got off of effexor, Olanzapine, and valium. Reduced paxil from 30 to 20 to 10 to 0. Major withdrawal went back to hospital. After 6 hospitalizations am now on 8mgs paxil, 62.5 mgs seroquel, 1.5 mgs clonazepam, 100 mgs gabapentin.

Good question... It's my belief that your brain starts to heal as soon as your first reduction. It kind of has to because the second you remove the drug you screw up homeostasis and the brain/body is always striving to maintain this balence.

I believe it does some healing during the weaning process. You are at avery difficult place right now but you are not a failure. I believe it was Abraham Lincoln that said "Success is getting up one more time than you get knocked down"

Janek, having to go up in dose is not failure! It's learning how you react to weaning. Many have had to go back up in dose to re-think the weaning process.. merely a bump in the withdrawal road and finding a safe way to accomplish that goal. No failure, just learning!

Re: Feel like such a failure

The failure is not having to take a step back. That is actually the success because you are listening to what your brain and body are telling you to do! That is the most important part of this entire process! You will know when you are ready to go for the next step down and you will know when maybe it wasn't the right time after all or if the step down may have been a bit too much. The success is being in control even at the times you feel you are in the least control. Hang in there. It will happen. Hugs to you!

Re: Feel like such a failure

Janek, the smart thing to do is find a way to get off with less severe symptoms. Going back up may be the way for you, it is not failure. You have been on medication for a long time....... why rush coming off?

A slow wean with stabilizing is the way to go for success Take care!
