Great support group I found... Recovery Inc.

Hi there,

To get my mind off this horrible ability to not breathe and this burning in my lungs, I am going to post something positive. Last night I went to this self-help mental health support group called Recovery Inc. I am already going to individual therapy but was feeling awful yesterday so I did a Google search on depression/anxiety support groups. There are tons of locations throughout the U.S. and even the world for these meetings... so I decided to go even though I was feeling so anxious I could hardly sit still and have not been sleeping hardly at all these past two weeks.

The meeting was really wonderful. Warm, welcoming, comforting... it just made me feel a lot better. I am definitely going to go back. Please click on the link below to read up about it and see if there are any in your area. Mine was held at a beautiful church and it was nice to talk to people face to face who have been in my shoes. They say this program has really helped them... so I figured it could not hurt, and it didn't. Me and these two wonderfully warm and funny older women sat and chatted for a 1/2 hour after the meeting ended.

Has anyone ever been to one of these/heard of these? I did a search but did not see anything. May you all be having a good day!

I've never heard of them, but I read most of that site and no red flags go up. A peer support group is a great thing!

Hey mouse, that's funny that you said that, because I am very wary of cults and found them to be the exact opposite. I even said that last night, "I was scared this is going to be a cult." Instead, it just felt more like an AA meeting, without the higher power stuff (not that there is anything wrong with that). Sorry it didn't work out for you!

Hey, the "group" is only as good as the people who are in it... there can be ALOT of variations from group to group. As long as it was positive for you that's great.

Good point, Laurie! Thanks for that. And I hope you are staying cool in this ridiculously bad heat wave we're having in the Northeast... well, actually, everywhere across the US!

Well, we just had quite a good earthquake here in cool breezy San Francisco. How this old house did creak and rock. My desk started wiggling around. Thought it might be another big one.

Turned out to be a moderate quake up around Santa Rosa, about 60 miles away. The reverberations travel and can feel really powerful.

Re: Great support group I found... Recovery Inc.

I went to a Recovery Inc. meeting last week to see what it was like.

They work from a couple of books and the reliance on jargon was initially unsettling, but what they're doing is trying to instill wise affirmations like "calm begets calm."

They describe it as basic cognitive behavior therapy, and I can see how it would work.

It's not for me, but I think it could be very helpful for people who want to work through difficult situations and bad interpersonal habits, maybe even troubled teenagers.

100 degrees in Jersey and an earthquake in SF? I'm glad I'm somewhere in the middle. Only 90 here with a (college) hockey game to go to in a little while. Considering myself lucky.

I've never heard of Recovery Inc.
Interesting. None in my area.

The quake was at the beginning of August, delyn. Fortunately, we don't get those that often!

Re: Great support group I found... Recovery Inc.

I was in my only group session in january, and like Scotty stated the "group" is only as good as the people in it. I will also add the person running the group is important. I went every day for two weeks and the people seemed to change daily, it seemed to be two different groups. Some of the people had a lasting positive impact, but some had a lasting negative impact. This is something I may consider looking into, if I can find one after work. The cult comment kinda freaked me out, so I will do my homework and be cautious.

Re: Great support group I found... Recovery Inc.

I would like to go to a meeting but checked and the one nearest me is in Atlanta. I don't drive in Atlanta, this would create more anxiety than it would undo. My son might take me, he drives in Atlanta, he commutes to the Art Institute of Atlanta.

Re: Great support group I found... Recovery Inc.

If anyone has found this group helpful, that's great!

A good (and reliable) friend recommended it to me a long time ago, but I have been really, really hesitant to go to yet another group. First of all, I spent many years in 12 step programs - without much real success and a whole lot of grief, frankly, (I went mostly for overeating, never had a street drug or alcohol problem). Second of all, I am simply not a "group person" (some people are, some are not).

I did hear mixed bag stories about Recovery, Inc. -my SIL went a number of times - to different meetings - with very bad experiences every time.

I am totally happy on my own, to be honest, after years and years of attending every kind of group imaginable, but I would certainly not discourage anyone from trying this or any other organized group.
