new. how long does it take?

How long did it take for most of you to feel the effects of Paxil. I've been taking Paxil CR for about 1 month. My biggest symptom of anxiety is the derealization/depersonalization and i'm afraid its still there. Any answers are much appreciated

Re: new. how long does it take?

It sneaks up on you, but by four weeks you should see some improvement in these symptoms. Are you having therapy as well?

Read this site carefully and decide if drug 'therapy' is really the best way to go.

Re: new. how long does it take?

one thing to watch out for is the doctor telling you that this pill is not the right one, you need to try this one...make sure yuo are well educated on what the doctor is telling yuo and prescribing you..as in the case of paxil, it is a very dangerous drug to get on..and once you are on, well try and get off..aint a pretty place....but your doctor will say..those folks on the internet dont know what they are talknig about, they are in the minority..well that is because the gabillion people on anti depressants dont give a crap and dont want to admit that they, like us, were led down a garden of eden path..your doctor will say "oh this drug has had great clinical reports"..yeah reports that are blood money tainted....so if paxhell has not worked for you ..take this as a message from a higher source to check out ALL ALTERNATIVES before you put a man made pill into your mouth that will coat your brain with goo..(metaphorically speaking of course)

Re: new. how long does it take?

Well said, homer. My psych doc told me not to visit this site after i told her about it. Really pissed me off.

Anyway, you should be feeling some relief in your symptoms by now. Be careful. Paxil itself can cause anxiety and depersonalization once it stops working or you try to come off of it then it's those symptoms with many, many more that you NEVER had before. Now that's scary.

wow punky, are you serious? did she give you a reason why you shouldn't? that blows my mind. i wonder if your psych doc would allow you to go to a real-life thursday evening support group, or if she'd tell you not to visit their meeting site too.

Re: new. how long does it take?

Hi,
I am relatively new to this site too. I came here because it was obvious to me immediately that Paxil was not good for me. I noticed that all the symptoms I was trying to relieve only worsened. Like a big giant magnifying glass was on them and it's very easy to pass that off as "your problems" and not the side effects of the drug. I am very lucky in that I didn't make it passed 4 doses. I quit because I thought I was dying. I read the warning label (if you want to call it that) and took heed. Now almost 2 weeks later, I am just getting back to baseline. It debilitated me for this whole time. Today is the first day that I don't feel under the influence of anything.
It's ok to question your doctor. Just be careful if you decide to stop taking it. Good luck and the people on this board are great so keep coming. They saved me during this hell.

Re: new. how long does it take?

Summer...the doctors are worried that the internet will take away from the therapy they are giving you in their office...they want total control of you, in a good way I mean, and if an outside inlfluence throws off their game plane, they get pissy...cant say I blame them, it makes their task more challenging...

For example, therapists say.."you need to brighen up..wear bright clothes"...someone on this site says..."wow bright clothes are bad for your karma"...you go back and question the threrpaist, who is human and will proabably be a bit angered that they are having their treatment questioned.

Of course there are some that are just plain money crazy and want all your business..but I would think a lot of it is either ego driven or practice driven...

Re: new. how long does it take?

I noticed a positive difference very quickly when I started paxil. Big difference in just a week or two. I was suffering from panic, anxiety and PTSD. The paxil worked for me at the time but getting off of it was a whole other story. If I could give you any advice it would be to get off of it now. Don't wait for it to 'work' because already your symptoms are worse and it is not 'working'.
I agree with other advice, do your research and don't let the doc talk you into taking the easy way out. Letting him or her write you a prescription and when that doesn't work, another prescription.

There is a wealth of information on this site and knowledge is power.

Yeah i'm serious. I first came here looking for answers as to where all the regular paxil had gone. After reading up on long term effects and realizing that paxil had "pooped out" long ago, I decided to come off of it. I talked with her about this site at that time. She said that most people don't experience severe withdrawl. She said that this represents a minority of people and didn't think i'd experience any problems. Well, of course, she was wrong. I've gotten way more help out of this place than what i've received from her. Nothing but putting me on other drugs such as zoloft, effexor, trazadone, abilify, etc. to help my paxil withdrawl so she said. Boy she was wrong about that too.

Re: new. how long does it take?

Punky,

Has your doc visited this site? I ask, because I post here a lot and I don't consider my withdrawal severe at all. The more I talk to people here and in the 'real world' I find that my withdrawal was pretty typical.

I asked her to, but i don't think she ever did. We haven't spoke of it since, but i think i will mention it to her next visit about how much this site has helped me. I tell my therapist about it every visit about how helpful this place is. The difference is that my therapist gets paxil withdrawl, but my psych doc is basically clueless i think.

Re: new. how long does it take?

That makes me sick. You know, I was reading online (and did a search in here) about risperdal, which my SIX YEAR OLD nephew is taking. When I found some frightening info, I called my sister and informed her directly. She called her doc the next day, and he laughed it off, saying "Don't trust everything you read on the internet". So the next day, I printed out facts from Docs, psychiatric journals, and newspapers, gave it to my sister to present to her doc, and you know what? She has not even called the doctor back - she doesn't want to deal with parenting my nephew, she'd rather medicate him. Guess she doesn't "trust what she reads on the internet" either.

Re: new. how long does it take?

Sorry dodedoo, I got off the subject. It took me about a month and a half to really feel paxil kick in, and then things were pretty good - of course, at 16, they had also given me valium, so it's easy to feel good.
Now, of course, I wish I'd never started in the first time. Just read my signature. But whatever you do, we're here.
