Celexa Weaning & Coffee

Will my coffee consumption hurt by Celexa W/D? Should I stop drinking it? I'd like to get off of caffeine as well. I drink about 24 oz. a day.

Wean one at a time? Or wean them both?

Re: Celexa Weaning & Coffee

Well, I think this is a pretty individual thing. Lots of caffeine can contribute to emotional issues for some people, esp. if it is in excess. I can't believe you have that much and nurse!!! Does your baby ever sleep!

I personally do not struggle with the emotional stuff with the caffeine that I drink. I just recently tried to start a very slow taper off of the 12 oz of Coke that I have every day. I am stuck at 10oz. Any lower than that and I get an unrelenting headache and terrible fatigue. I just don't have time for that right now. Maybe in a month I will try to get it down a little bit more.

So, you might try to decrease what you have by a little bit. It might actually make you feel better, or it might make you feel so much worse that it's not worth trying at the moment. However, if you begin to have a big problem with anxiety, then I would make it a priority.

Hope that made sense!

Re: Celexa Weaning & Coffee

You might also consider adding some decaf to the regular to lower the caffeine per cup. You could still drink the same 24 oz a day.

Re: Celexa Weaning & Coffee

I was silly and tried to cut caffeine out completely. Oh boy, WAS I silly. So, I switched to decaf, and I still have about 8 oz of caffeinated stuff a day. But I definitely up, up, upped the water intake! Kind of helps staying away from the caffeine, because I'm full of water!!

Re: Celexa Weaning & Coffee

I miss coffee! For whatever reason, I just haven't drank it since my w/d. I've had a couple cups, but I'm basically afraid of the anxiety. Weird, huh?

Re: Celexa Weaning & Coffee

Ugh, I can't do this... I must have my morning coffee or I don't function. It's really the only caffeine I have... I don't drink soda, but my cup of joe is a huge vice of mine. When I was pregnant I went to decaf, yuk! I sorely missed my coffee, and a nice cold beer on a hot night... ahhhh, the good days!

I drink about 6-8 12 oz. cokes a day! I know its awful, I am so addicted. I try to cut down, its like I say, "I will only have 2 cokes today, and I wind up drinking 6. I am weaning off Celexa too. The cokes I'm sure aren't helping at all. And definitely not good for me!

One thing at a time, Sunny! If the Coke makes you happy, then by all means, keep drinking it! You can worry about cutting back on that AFTER the Celexa wean.

Sunny, did you know that craving sodas is one of the side effects of paxil (and possibly other SSRIs)? It is. When I started paxil, I was an occasional coke drinker. I did not buy them at the supermarket or keep them in the house. Two months into paxil use, that changed. The one good thing about starting paxil while pregnant was that it kept my coke drinking in check. I had the max allowed by my doc, 24 oz a day. Since I got off paxil, I have cut back, first to one 12 oz a day. Now, I am trying to taper off ounce by ounce. It sucks that it is so hard. I am down to ten ounces after about three weeks. Going lower than that is too hard when I'm so busy.

Try to wait a bit later in the day to 'start' with the cokes. If you don't introduce the sweet taste, you won't crave it quite so much. Force yourself to drink more water, esp. early in the day. It will be harder to drink so much coke.

I never knew that, Kim! I can't say that's a s/e I ever got. But, I stopped drinking soda years ago, when I quit smoking. I have, maybe, 1-2 ginger ales or Sierra Mists a week.

See, learn something new every day!

If the coffee is bad for you you'll know it. Coming of the ADs I was kind of wired and anxious which the coffee made worse. I do fine with it now but I'm off all the drugs and have been for a while.

Yeah, I didn't just drink Coke, it was Vanilla Coke, sweeter with ten extra calories. Didn't notice that until later. Scott has said the same thing, but for him it was Cherry Coke.

I stopped drinking black tea + coffee since my w/d.. and I miss it terribly but I'm almost too scared to try drinking it again. I've been eating chocolates on an almost daily basis since w/d though.

Re: Celexa Weaning & Coffee

I was a huge caffiene fiend, I used to drink tea every morning and at least two cans of coca-cola every day. In w/d I had to quit drinking caffiene b/c it made me anxious and even twitchier than usual. I can finally drink caffiene again but I've cut WAY back. Only a couple of coffees a week.

That seems to be the concensus with a lot of people. I'm sure I'll be the same way, soon.

Today I've had a miniature Snickers bar (those little two bite ones you can get around Halloween), and itty bitty chocolate wafer things.

I really want coffee though. I was mostly a tea drinker, but everyone around me has been pounding 5-6 coffees a day, and it smells so good.

Re: Celexa Weaning & Coffee

It seems to me a lot of people crave chocolate and I think it's because it gives dopamine a badly needed boost. With coffee it seems the smell is always better than the taste.

Oh my God! I've been addicted to Haagen Daz recently and had to have 1/2 a large tub an evening! I just thought I was pigging out but never considered it could be withdrawal related. Right, frozen yoghurt for me from now on!

Look carefully at the labels before you decide that the frozen yogurt is any better. It often has as many calories and fat per serving as ice cream.

Kim, are you serious!? Why would ice cream makers try to hype frozen yogurt as being so much healthier? That just stinks!

Re: Celexa Weaning & Coffee

I cut out my afternoon cup only. My naturaopath wanted me to get off it completely, but I'm still on the fence about this. I read that there are some benefits to coffee. I really needed that cup in the morning especially when my cortisol was so high.

Anyway, he told me to wean off the coffee, otherwise you could get migraines. Start by mixing 3/4 regular and 1/4 decaf beans or if you use ground, do the math. Then the next week, do half and half, etc. until you are either drinking decaf or none in the afternoon. It took me about a month. When I got to this point, I replaced coffee with tea in the afternoon.
