Muscle and Joint Pain

I successfully withdrew (slow taper) from 18 months of being on Zoloft in July.

I am wracked with pain in my muscles and joints. Is this b/c Zoloft tinkered with serotonin which plays a role in pain regulation? OUCH. Did anyone else experience this after they got off of an A/D? It feels like I have fibromyalgia and is very unpleasant.

Re: Muscle and Joint Pain

Yes, every symptom of fibromyalgia. And the joint pains don't stay in the same joints. They travel at random. I lived on ibuprofen. I still get pains, but at least they stop on occasion now. And congratulations on completion of your taper!

Re: Muscle and Joint Pain

Ooooh, my aching back.....

Yep, these meds seem to dull muscle and joint pain. At least, it did with me. Now I'm off Effexor, the pain has returned. (arthritis)

So, they affect our nervous system in one way or another, that's for sure.

Re: Muscle and Joint Pain

Funny, I never had joint pain before paxil and while in WD developed it in my fingers.....I don't know if it due to age 38 or because of the WD symptoms, but to this day the joint pain is still there...

*sigh*

Re: Muscle and Joint Pain

Is it still as bad as it was during withdrawal?

Re: Muscle and Joint Pain

This was, unquestionably, my worst, longest-lasting, and most frequently recurring withdrawal symptom with the possible exception of fatigue. Just like DeLyn said, it travels. Rest seems to help and, when it was at its worst, I would take an ibuprofen. It will pass.

Re: Muscle and Joint Pain

Sage -- I have this too. Mostly my neck and shoulder area. But, last week, the third finger on my right hand where it attaches to your hand, hurt so badly I could hardly stand it. The surface of the skin was numb as well. Went away after about three days. It will pass!!!

Focus your attention on the here and now. Recognize it for what it is: the one moment of the only life you will ever have that you truly possess. Rare is the individual who has come to completely accept that the past is no more than a memory and the future an assumption about unborn events.

Re: Muscle and Joint Pain

When I switched cold turkey from Paxil to Paxil CR (taking a doctors advice) back in June of 2002, I had knotted muscles on either side of my neck by day 9. They were large to the point I couldn't move my head! Also I had hives all over my body - everywhere. Big, gross red ones. IT IS UNDENIABLE that changing or quitting SSRI's causes system-wide problems which COMMONLY include knotted and sore muscles/joints. Just FYI (and bad skin I guess-haha)

Hi there - I sleep with a hot water bottle and always have an electric heating pad going to place on the hurtful areas. As well, gentle stretching and warm baths.

Re: Muscle and Joint Pain

I have said this before... while being tested by a specialist, he looked me over and asked 'how long have you been on antidepressants?'..... never. But it lead into the conversation, and apparently people on them long term or while in withdrawal suffer from fibromyalgia. He also said that for most people it leaves when the withdrawal is done with.

Re: Muscle and Joint Pain

Thanks all! It is good to know I am not alone. Accupunture was my next step. All of my meridian points feel sore/blocked. Maybe reflexology will help too.
Rita - I can't beleive what you an your specialist talked about - I thought fibromyalgia was treated with a/d's (Cymbalta) - SCARY!

I would tend to agree with this - as the time between now and my last pill gets longer, the joint and muscle pain tends to lessen ever so slightly. There is hope for us yet!
