How does paxil work to help with anxiety?

Wild theories, humor, and of course anger are welcomed.

Personally I think it works by cutting down or off sex drive. It's like nuetering a dog or spading a cat. Why decreasing sex drive decreases anxiety, in a sexually 'normal' person I have no clue.

I think it may make you just not give a damn that you've got anxiety. I'm just glad I don't swallow the poison anymore!

Gee, I thought sex was good for a person, sort of like a stress reliever, without being drugged.

Re: How does paxil work to help with anxiety?

Well, it does increase the level of serotonin in the brain ... and serotonin is a "feel good" chemical that helps keep you calm and happy. That's how it worked for me, anyway .. took the edge off, and I was a lot less likely to get depressed when I was on Paxil. I felt more confident and less nervous. I don't understand, though, how a lot of people get an amped up feeling from it, especially in the beginning, unless that is a side effect or adverse reaction and not the way the drug is supposed to work.

It's amazing to me how paxil works from person to person. It is so different and unique imo.

Re: How does paxil work to help with anxiety?

It's nothing to do with the sex. Zoloft "cured" my anxiety/depression for a while, while simultaneously making me even more of a raging horndog. Now, in withdrawal, when I go through periods of low libido, *that* makes me incredibly anxious and upset. I would say that theory is a non-flyer.

That's because we have no idea what the "levels" were to begin with!! Just what level is the tipping point between feeling good and killing people or yourself???

There are so many different levels to consider though, chemically speaking. Also age, gender, mom held me enough, not enough, traumas, brain wiring. These drugs are just to unpredictable to be given if each patient that takes it can't be followed and addressed on a unique basis. Lumping patients into the "this is what should and should not happen based on our studies" is not the way these drugs should be given.

Re: How does paxil work to help with anxiety?

I'd like some feedback on my situation please. I asked my doctor to start tapering me off Paxil since I've been reading so much negative information about Paxil. The thing is while I was tapering I didn't like my personality. I started to become angry and I didn't like that. So I went back to my usual dose. Has that ever happend to anyone else?
