Breathlessness/Heart pounding

Hi all,
My daughter has been experiencing the palpitations, heart pounding and also not being able to catch her breath; as in not getting a good deep breath. It's bad enough at night to keep her from falling asleep so therefore, it makes her tired and the viscious circle begins. She tries to relax, but it's so hard. Has anyone else experienced both the breathing and heart symptoms together and do they go away? I read where people have these during their taper, but she's 19 mo. out.
I am looking into getting her an EKG and trying to find a doctor for her to see that believes in this stuff.
Thanks

Re: Breathlessness/Heart pounding

I had no heart issues at all in early w/d. Then, at month 12, I started having intense and rapid heart beat -- possibly due to tapering off some Chinese medicine, possibly not. This lasted about 1.5 months, and then got much better for 1.5 months. Then, it came back again, not as bad, and I still have it at 20 months. I have heard about others getting brand new symptoms late in the game, which eventually resolve, just like everything else. Your daughter hasn't started taking any supplement or anything that could affect heart or respiration has she?

Re: Breathlessness/Heart pounding

She generally has been taking magnesium and Omega 3 fish oil. We had gotten out of the habit of taking them, but have started back up yesterday. Hopefully they will help. But, otherwise, no changes in anything she does or takes.
Thanks

Re: Breathlessness/Heart pounding

She stopped taking them about the time this stuff started bothering her....
I wondered about it, but now I'm thinking there is a link.
Could someone give me the name of the Better type of Mag. to take? I remember seeing posts stating there are different kinds. Thanks

Re: Breathlessness/Heart pounding

Yes, oxide. I just am realizing it's not the best.
I have some zinc magnesium aspartate from GNC Store. It contains Valerian root for sleep aid. I think I will have her try it tonight.
Any thoughts or suggestions not to have her try it? I have posted the question in the supplements section also.
Thanks

I'd keep the supplements as simple as possible and would be wary of taking magnesium with additives like Valerian in it. We've seen reactions to various supplements here, but the reports on Magnesium and Omega 3s are all positive.

I see Scott has already suggested the best type of Magnesium to take.

I'm sorry your daughter was ill-advised to go the cold-turkey route... The palpitations are pretty scarey, and she might find it best cutting out all stimulants like caffeine. I wonder if the breathlessness is caused by fear brought on by the palpitations? It's difficult to say. I do know my asthma's been worse in w/d.

Good luck to you and your daughter.

It is always better to get anything ruled out medically. I would see a medical doctor and have tests done as soon as can be arranged. If the tests come out fine, that alone takes much of the stress away.

Yup!! Once you rule out anything else going on, this will be easier to handle. Right now the "unknown" is anxiety producing. Magnesum glycinate(google for availability online) is the best way to go.

Re: Breathlessness/Heart pounding

it can take a few weeks for your body to build up on it.. i would take it by itself, not with calcium. The largest dose should be taken at night before bed. Other than that you can take it anytime and any dose.

I had all of those symptoms and they really started at almost a year off Paxil and continued. I ended up having an EKG and being sent to a cardiologist/electrophysiologist. After a few tests my heart turned out to be fine but the cardiologist did find me to be low on magnesium!! He put me on a supplement and it has helped. I was also having twitching and that has gone away with the magnesium supplement.

Re: Breathlessness/Heart pounding

has your daughter ever learned about diaphragmatic breathing? during most of my "omg it feels like i'm not getting enough oxygen" episodes, i've discovered that i was breathing TOTALLY out of my chest and not out of my belly (the proper way). it's a difficult skill to pick up; the first time i tried diaphragmatic breathing i was convinced that i was not getting enough air. but with practice, i think she'd find some relief in it.

Things that work for me:
1. Praying (if you are religious, God certainly will help if you ask Him.)
2. Getting angry at it, showing you aren't scared makes it powerless.
