Withdrawal study participation

Hi everyone,

I am currently conducting research at the University of Stirling into the withdrawal effects of SSRI antidepressants and am looking for individuals willing to participate in my study. Participation will involve the completion of a simple questionnaire which will be administered and submitted electronically. If you have withdrawn from an SSRI and would like to take part in the study please contact me via e-mail at mlp06@stir.ac.uk.

Thanks for your time,

Matthew Preston

What is the purpose of the study? Is it for a thesis or a class..or is it a sponosred research study..and if so, who is the sponser..I, for one, will not participate in any study put forth by any of the pharmceutical companies..please clarify.

thanks

Re: Withdrawal study participation

Hi homer,

The study is the dissertation aspect of my undergraduate degree. So no drug companies are involved! The questionnaire itself includes information regarding the purpose, however here is a excerpt from my academic rationale.

A degree of controversy surrounds the withdrawal effects of several SSRI antidepressants, and in particular Paroxatine (Seroxat) (Ellison, 1996). Furthermore, several of these effects remain largely uncategorized in the current literature. Additionally, through anecdotal evidence, it has come to the researcher’s attention that previously frequent and heavy users of the recreational drug 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA or “Ecstasy”) may experience similar symptoms. This is not reported in the current literature. The purpose of the study would be to identify two such symptoms in both withdrawing SSRI and MDMA populations.

Re: Withdrawal study participation

Fitzy, members are cautious because of past experience. In one case the student actually used peoples real names, mixed up experiences etc., AND it was posted online. It took a huge effort, contacting the university professor etc. to have the information removed.

This is why people are concerned, any long term members will remember this incident.

Focus your attention on the here and now. Recognize it for what it is: the one moment of the only life you will ever have that you truly possess. Rare is the individual who has come to completely accept that the past is no more than a memory and the future an assumption about unborn events.

Hi guys.

You don't have to be totally of them to partake, although I would ask that you have experienced 7 days of withdrawal.

Also thanks to everyone who has got back to me so far!

Re: Withdrawal study participation

Hi again everyone.

Someone has just raised a point with me that I feel needs addressing. Can people still submit their questionnaires even if they have not experienced any of the symptoms it addresses? To establish these symptoms in the literature I need to show that a reasonable level of individuals experience them across the whole user population, knowing the rough ratio of individuals who do not experience them is of equal value. If every individual who has not experienced any of the symptoms did not submit the questionnaire it would greatly bias my results and damage the validity of my research!

Thanks.
