Alcohol Intolerance

So 2 days ago was my birthday and I went out with some friends and had a few drinks. Maybe one too many than I should have had but not nearly as many as I've had in the past. Well ever since I've been weaning from Paxil, I've had horrible hangovers, even after just 2 or 3 drinks. Like I can barely function the next day. I never used to get hangovers this bad, even after many many drinks. What the heck???

Re: Alcohol Intolerance

well..alcophol and paxhell is a no no..I did it as you may know to excess...I suffered from 2-3 day hangovers, but then agina I drank 20 beer a night with a few shooters to make it that much stupider......

Paxil metobolizes in the liver..which is pretty much whwre alcohol hangs out..so, double the poison = double the fun..not!!

Re: Alcohol Intolerance

I don't drink. I don't like it. My former spouse was alcoholic. Turns me off.
I did goto a wedding last m month and I wanted to see what it was like.

I had two small glasses of champagne, ate everything and danced. It was a very joyous occasion and I was very happy for my friends. The next day I was severely depressed, and it lasted for several days. Nothing is worth feeling depressed. This truly was a chemical reaction.

Re: Alcohol Intolerance

I was off for a year before I could tolerate alcohol. Even now I am very careful with it, but I can have a few drinks. For a long time, it made me feel awful for several days afterwards - nowhere near as bad now.

Re: Alcohol Intolerance

Paxil can inhibit the immediate absorbtion of alcohol because they use the same pathway in the liver to be metabolized. After you are off paxil, the absorbtion of the alcohol is much faster, so you should feel drunker faster, but not for as long, if that makes sense.

Is the absorbtion of alcohol slower when you take Paxil?

I don't think so. It's my understanding that the ability to get rid of alcohol is diminished by being on Paxil or any other SSRI / SNRI.

Katie
Something for you to think about.... Disinhibition is a side effect of both Paxil and alcohol so be very careful.

I know this. And honestly, I rarely drink. But it was my birthday and I'm young and just wanted to celebrate a little. Good thing birthdays happen only once a year.

Katie,
I was sure you knew and didn't suspect you drank much but I still felt obligated to remind you. Hope you had a wonderful time!!

My understanding, and I could be wrong, was that your absorbtion of both paxil and alcohol is slower because they are fighting to be metabolized by your liver, and that they both stay in your body much longer. Could be wrong, though. However, it would explain why so many people don't feel all that drunk on paxil, but do feel the after effects for so long.

Re: Alcohol Intolerance

Yes. generally as Brian said, Paxil is still in your system and will be for 18 months to 2 years. It is VERY important to treat your body with extra care and so the absence of alcohol, caffeine from ANY source, sugars and nicotine are very important ..because all these substances work on the brain chemistry in a negative way for us who are in withdrawal stage... One thing that was not mentioned about alcohol is that it is a "depressant" ..so that if your trying to help your nervous system rebuild serotonin...you just acted against your best interests.

For now have a look at Dr Groenendijks recommendations..they are excellent..I follow his advice very closely.
Here is the link http://www.antidepressantsfacts.com/reaction.htm

Re: Alcohol Intolerance

Have learned the hard way that I MUST be careful with how much I drink now. I rarely drink anymore, and when I do it's only one or two. If I consume much more than that, it can have me out of commission for a week. No amount of good times is worth being violently ill for a week.

Re: Alcohol Intolerance

Looking back on my journal I mentioned I found alcohol hard to tolerate, if I had it in the evening I was awake most of the night. That was at 6 months, I dont find it such a problem now at 17 months, although sometimes if I take supplements before bed I usually have a bad night.
