SLEEP, need sleep

Since my last cut I have been doing very well for the most part. Just having real trouble falling asleep, it's taking about 2 hours every night to drop off. I have restless legs syndrome, which was kept at bay while I was on a higher dose of paxil. I'm also waking up early. I'm getting to the point where I am quite strung out and am having difficulty thinking and making decisions.

I would really prefer not to take any sleep meds. I took a fernurgen (antihistamine) at 1 o'clock this morning as I was getting so desperate, but today I am feeling very dopey as a result.

Valerian, melatonin etc just doesn't work for me. Does anyone have any suggestions. And yes, I am following good sleep hygiene practices. Any help would be appreciated.

I have taken Murelax in the past, this has a really bad rebound effect when I stop taking it. I don't want to take it again but I am really getting desperate.

Re: SLEEP, need sleep

Kelli, sorry don't have any anwers but plenty of sympathy. It's nearly 3am in the UK and I cannot sleep for the 2nd night running - and the restless legs is a HUGE part of that. I had gone through a good(ish) spell where at least I had cut out daytime naps (vicious circle) but I am on a downward sleep spiral again. I feel for you !

Re: SLEEP, need sleep

Ducktail- I feel for you also. Insomnia has been one of my worst symptoms. I would just go days without sleeping. I found nothing to help. except about once a week I would just have to take xanax. Like you, I was really concerned about getting hooked on something for sleep. It's gotten better now. I can pretty much count on getting sleep every night now. I have not taken xanax in 6 weeks.

I realize this isn't what you would call "encouraging" but my point is that it does get better. To be honest, I was probably 6 months out before I could bank on sleeping at least for awhile every night. Last night I went to sleep within 15 minutes and slept pretty much for 8 hours. I don't think it is "normal" sleep yet, but it is refreshing and, important to me, several hours of "healing" go by that I am unaware of.

It sucks- I send all my empathy. I don't know what you have to handle during the day....... therefore it may not be an option to go days without sleep for you (I actually would go several days with no sleep) but it does get better if you can just hang on.

Nasty, nasty stuff, this paxil. I just send all my best wishes, for the small part that it is worth to you in the middle of the night. I hope for you. akaenew

Re: SLEEP, need sleep

I had a lot of trouble with restless legs while on Paxil and in early w/d. I would wake up practically running in place in bed. As I got farther from my last dose, this symptom eventually went away.

I'm sure this has been discussed on other threads, but IMO, RLS is a condition that's directly attributable to Paxil (or other SSRI) use, and it's no coincidence that the drug currently being touted to treat it is manufactured by GSK.

Re: SLEEP, need sleep

Thanks everyone, I'm pretty strung out at the mo- have had a huge change in routine to cope with as well. Not coping today. I had trouble with RLS before paxil. I take all the supplements, as well have started taking iron as recommended on the RLS website. It does actually seem to help. I am anxious about our new routine, I know we will probably adjust, we have to be early to bed early to rise, and when I haven't had any sleep it's kinda hard to do. During the day my routine varies with the kids activities, housework, shopping, appointments, volunteer work etc, the days are long.

Thanks again to all replies, you know I really appreciate it. You guys are a lifeline.

Re: SLEEP, need sleep

I've been Seroxat free for over three years now and still have trouble with my sleep. During my time on Seroxat I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnoea and was given a CPAP machine - basically a mask that floods your airways with a continuous flow of air. Not long after I quit Seroxat - I found I didn't need the CPAP anymore. Like many others I gained weight whilst on Seroxat and many peeps overweight can develop sleep apnoea. Thankfully, I don't have to wear that mask anymore and feel like sumpin out of a Star Wars movie.

Since I have been Seroxat free I have lost 3 stone in weight - I'm no Brad Pitt but I'm no Luciano Pavorotti either
