Re: first time going to a psychiatrist

I'm going to say what is on my mind here. The first thing is that switching to another medication to ease paxil withdrawal does not work for the majority of people. The only thing to ease paxil withdrawal is paxil, and a proper wean to come off. It is not easy for long time users for sure, worse when someone CT or rapidly weans off.

The psychiatrist will most probably tell you that this couldn't be withdrawal, that you require medication. He/she will most probably take you off celexa and put you on a different anti depressant and add an anti psychotic to the mix.

Read the threads here of others experiences, go into the appointment informed.

I understand your frustration... One day at a time is all you can do, it really does get better.

Re: first time going to a psychiatrist

CG, I know the usual thing on these boards is to trash psychiatrists, so many have had our trust broken by being put on meds in the first place or, when we try to come off them, being told our w/d symptoms are all in our heads. It happened to me, too. But I hung tough until I found a really good guy, one who supports my being med-free and is working with me to taper really, really slowly off Klonopin. (I did the Paxil taper last year, too fast, on my own.) It helps a lot to know what you expect from the doc beforehand. Write it down if you have to. My therapist suggested I tell him I was looking for a "friendly ally" to help me become drug-free. And be prepared to stand firm. Outside a hospital, nobody can force you take a drug you really, truly don't want.

I can't do fish oil either, neither can Kim/Katesmom. It makes me feel like I'm climbing the walls. The supplements, like the meds, are a totally individual thing.

Very, very good luck to you.

So true. We went through numerous psychiatrists... my daughter now has one to support what she needs in regards to education. She provides talk therapy instead of prescribing medications.

These docs are few and far between.

Re: first time going to a psychiatrist

Tammy, you will feel better, like Rita said. You are still in Paxil withdrawal and that is what you are feeling.
My advice with psychiatrists is don't let him talk down to you. You are looking for help and he is supposed to meet you at your level.
Ask him if he knows about Paxil Withdrawal, if he does he might be able to help you.
If you don't want meds tell him and be firm if he tries to push.
I'm hoping he will be a good one who will do therapy with you and help you through.
Good Luck,
eileen
