Re: thyroid test

I cannot say.. you have to know the "reference parameters" they are using for the the test. which test by the way..there are many..TSH, T4 and T3

If its TSH and its high..it means your pituitary gland is really trying to get your thyroid working..it means your hypo..which if it is would explain any anxiety or panic attacks or depression..... it is reasonably easy to cure. Of course I would also check out for Hashimoto's and Graves antibodies ...just to make sure and a physical exam of your thyroid.

Re: thyroid test

If that's a TSH, then it's high. Norm is at the upper limits, 6. This means that your pituitary is pumping out more thyroid stimulating hormone trying to get it to make more t3 and t4. This would put in you in the "hypothyroid" category. This is what we usually see with ssri users, and it should be treated with hormone replacement since the thyroid isn't cutting it. BUT you should ask what the t3 and t4 levels were to confirm this.

Re: thyroid test

The platelets are fine. A TSH without at t3 and t4 tells him nothing. To confirm thyroid problems you have to have all of the results. If you have a high TSH and a low t3,t4, then you are hypothyroid. If you have a low TSH and a high t3,t4 you are hyperthyroid.

If he only did a TSH, he only has half the story. The "old" range of normal was up to 5. Recently is has been changed to .3-3. So a TSH of 7 is HIGH!! Especially if one is having symptoms.

Re: thyroid test

I became hypothyroid after going on ADs. I only had the TSH test and that is years ago. So should I ask for more testing?

You might now want to look into acupuncture as a safe and very effective way in dealing with your hypothyroid condition...of course please rule out Hashimotos or Graves ....

Re: thyroid test

Johnny, Hypothroid is Hashimoto's Disease. I don't mean to contradict you, but it would be dangerous to have acupuncture and not go on medication for it.

Re: thyroid test

Tammy, I'm sorry that you are having a hard time. Why did you doctor switch you from Paxil to Celexa?
I bet you are very tired and hypothyroid can cause you to be very depressed. I developed this after I was on Paxil and my TSH was in the 50's before my jerk of a doctor would believe me. When I had to go back to work after supper, I wouldn't even eat, just fall on the couch and sleep. He is not my doctor now. Good Luck!

Re: thyroid test

Eileen actually it is not..you can be Hypo and not have Hashimotos... there is a distinction....1) hypo and no "pathology..just a lazy thyroid
2) hypo and antibodies are found..THEN...you have Hashimotos
3) you were given radioactive iodine and well it killed off too much of your thyroid...thus making you hypo....this is corrected by special thyroid drugs

Type 1 is the one I am talking about and it is not a far flung "alternative"..we just had a member speaking how their Mom was helped with her "thyroid condition" using acupuncture.

Re: thyroid test

Hyperthyroidism also can be the root cause of anxiety.

I must read the book I have Johnny, thanks for the information. I think acupuncture works for some things and some people, but not for all.
