sedated feeling
so I have been off paxil and all drugs for 6 1/2 months now. The most prominent feeling I have now is this EXTREME sedated feeling. It feels like I am ON a drug all the time and I am NOT on anything. I eat really, really healthy, take vitamins, exercise when I can, no alchohol or smoking. Basically I have eliminated anything else that could be negative. But still, my eyes feel really droopy and I feel like I could just sit there and stare and druel on myself if I just gave in to the sedation feelings. Anyway, does anyone have any clue what this could be or what I could do to help it? Doctors are of NO help when I tell them about it. They just look at me like I am crazy and just get refered to seek psychological help.

Re: sedated feeling
The fatigue lasts for quite a while, but it does subside. I have gone for a long time without a have-to-have nap. Motivation and energy for motivation is getting greater also.

Re: sedated feeling
I experinced extreme fatigue at the 6 month mark as well. It was so bad a couple times I thought I was going to go into a comma. This period didn't last long for me however and things got quite a bit better after that. Hang in there Pat, I hope you get some relief soon.

Re: sedated feeling
Same with me, I used to take Remeron I am in withdrawn for the 7th month.
I feel sleepy, but cant fall sleep. No energy, no motivation. A PDR would say depressed, and would put me on an AD. I dont want that and keep hoping it will get better. A few things help like American Ginseng, Coke, but then I cant sleep at night.. I will try with Vitamin B12 sublingual. roy100 |

Re: sedated feeling
Yup the time line is just about correct for that, its basically the "adreanal fatigue" setting in..to make along story short..Paxil uses the Adrenal glands as a resource..sort of like "mining " especially if your on Paxil for a long time.
Just remember to take your B vitamins, calcium and magnesium, stay away from all caffeine and alcohol. You'll need to do gentle exercise and rest..thats the only cure... Regards, Johnny |

Re: sedated feeling
Pat - the fatigue was a killer for me the first 7-8 months. Just excrutiating! It did let up but I'm not anywhere near where I'd like to be. Maybe I'm just getting old. I faithfully took sublingual B12 and my magnesium during this time. I've slacked off a bit on the B12 because for some weird reason, I'm starting to experience some jitteriness when I take it now. But the fatigue isn't as extreme as in the beginning. It does get better.
Thanks Johnny for the explanation on adrenal fatigue. Very interesting.

Re: sedated feeling
The adrenal fatigue info from Johnny is very interesting - I didn't appreciate how paxil confuses lots of body systems. Is there anywhere I can read more on this?
Thanks Wee T

lets quote the famous Dr Groenendijk..he seems to know what he is talking about..here is a direct quote and link to the article in question. http://www.antidepressantsfacts.com/pinealstory.htm If a patient continues to ingest a particular SSRI-antidepressant over a prolonged period of time, eventually the bodies Adrenal Glands may lose their efficiency and "Adrenal Exhaustion Syndrome" will be the end result. Adrenal Exhaustion causes levels of adrenaline initially to fall and levels of cortisol to rise. Ultimately, also cortisol levels fall. When untreated, Adrenal Exhaustion will lead to seriously declining physical health. Many (former) SSRI-AntiDepressant users reported fatigue as a long term side-effect or were diagnosed with "Chronigue Fatigue Syndrome." People suffering from stress are generally diagnosed with this disorder. Symptoms range from simple exhaustion to much more complex problems that are secondary to excessive output of adrenal hormones in the bloodstream, leading to Adrenal Exhaustion. Unlike the other hormones, it takes a long time before the Adrenal Glands have their adrenaline levels restored. Could we say that the SSRI-AntiDepressant "works" by slowly excavating the body's Adrenal Glands? Regards, Johnny |

Re: sedated feeling
thanks guys.
Honestly I tend to forget these days that I am still effected by the 11 years on paxil. I try not to even think of Paxil. That's why I rarely come on here. But about the sedation I speak of.. I don't just feel a little "tired" or low in energy, I feel like I am "zoned out" or "drugged up" if that makes sense. Like I said, I feel like take drugs, when I am probably one of the most chemical free people I know of at this point. I sit there sometimes just staring at the wall with my mouth open, breathing all weird and drueling with my eyelids all droopy feeling. I HATE it.

Re: sedated feeling
i know how you feel about not wanting to think of it. i can go a few days now without thinking of it much. it's a bit difficult when your every day is plagued with it, but as time goes on.. (you know the story). i am pretty tired most of the time too, but i mostly got that drugged out feeling the first few weeks i went off paxil. hopefully this resolves for you soon.

Re: sedated feeling
Pat, this could be something having to do with insulin metabolism, another one of those autonomic nervous system problems that can self-correct with a little help.
Try to minimize sugar and starches, too, and eat at regular times. Withdrawal exacerbated my hypoglycemia, which made me spaced out and tired, but I'm much better now. I started taking cinnamon tablets (500mg) and I believe they helped a lot. They smell and taste good, too.
