Re: Mammogram Worries

I don't know if this suits for english, but in portuguese, the elder ones use to say "oh my God, that guy has thyroid" meaning he has a problem in the thyroid and not the thyroid per se... some people here think the thyroid is a disease ... the same for the prostate...

Re: Mammogram Worries

I swear, the last time I had a mammogram I had black and blue marks all over my chest and was so sore the next day or so! Not a comfortable experience whatsoever.....

The first mammogram I had, they called me back for a second mammogram and an ultrasound also. This second one, they too wanted a second one with another ultrasound - I'll be honest and say that I was totally lazy and never went back for the "second screening". I'm due for another one soon so I'll try to be better about it this time!

Anyway, according to the doctors, I'm very "cystic" and they need to be more careful with those kind of breasts....for instance, I would NEVER go have a mammogram the week before I get my period, as they would be taking biopsies all over the place with how many cysts I get!

Oh, tell me all about it - the part that makes me squeal nowadays is when the technician has to squeeze all the breast tissue that is under the arm along the bra line up with the breast itself; The breast is in the squeezer and the corners of the squeezer are poking me in the armpit. Then it's "hold your breath." Yeah, right. I beat you to it.

What is it about the subject of mammograms that brings out the humor even in men? Too young to have one, indeed.

Re: Mammogram Worries

It's just so comforting to hear this is common. As I said, it scared the poo out of me this morning! See....next week actually is the week before my period, so I'll be sure and let them know that.

Of course, that means my boobs will be sore anyway, which will make it all the more pleasant.

Cayte,

Thanks for a great laugh. I needed that.

QUOTE=Cayte;366609]MAMMOGRAMS - OUCH!

Many women are afraid of their first mammogram, but there is no need to worry. By taking a few minutes each day for a week preceding the exam and doing the following exercises, you will be totally prepared for the test and best of all, you can do these simple exercises right in and around your home

EXERCISE ONE

Open your refrigerator door and insert one breast in door. Shut the door as hard as possible and lean on the door for good measure. Hold that position for a few seconds. Repeat again in case the first time wasn't effective enough.

EXERCISE TWO

Visit your garage at 3 am when the temperature of the cement floor is just perfect. Take off all your clothes and lie comfortably on the floor with one breast wedged under the rear tire of the car. Ask a friend to slowly back the car up until your breast is sufficiently flattened and chilled. Turn and repeat with the other breast

EXERCISE THREE

Freeze two metal bookends overnight. Strip to the waist. Invite a stranger into the room. Press the bookends against one of your breasts. Smash the bookends together as hard as you can. Set up an appointment with the stranger to meet next year and do it again.

YOU ARE TOTALLY PREPARED!

AND, just a thought for all the women out there........MENtal illness, MENstrual cramps, MENtal breakdown, MENopause............

Ever notice how all of women's problems start with men?.........And ...

When we have real trouble it's HISterectomy!!!!

Send this to all women to have a laugh AND, don't forget to have a mammogram!!!!!!

OMG I almost fell off the couch reading all these hilarious responses! Don't worry too much Laurie. My aunt has to go back almost every year but they don't ever find anything. They are just trying to get the clearest picture they can the first time in case anything changes. Wow, I'm so looking forward to my first mammogram now that I know what I'm in for! OUCH!

Re: Mammogram Worries

Laurie,
This happens quite often. In fact even though my Mom has had numerous ones done, every once in a while they'll ask her to come back in because they missed a spot or something or other.

Not to worry!

Hugs to you!

Cindy, I'm telling ya....it's not comfortable, but it really didn't "hurt." Now, next week is the week before my period, so I got a feeling this one's gonna sting a bit....

Thanks, JoAnn. I'm finding out this is very common and I can't tell you how relieved I am.

BlueEyes, I'm not a doctor or nurse or anything, but although we all know that mammograms are uncomfortable (and anyone who didn't know, knows it now after treading this thread!!!) but I've never heard of anyone having black and blue marks all over from it.

Maybe you just bruise easily, but I'm wondering about the place where you had the mammorgram done. Maybe you should tell your doctor (your internist or G.P., not the doctor where you had the mammogram). He or she might suggest you have your next mammogram done somewhere else. Either the technician might have been using too much pressure, or their equipment might not be as up-to-date as some that don't require as much pressure as the older machines.

Recently my mammograms have been less uncomfortable and when I mentioned it to them, they said they had newer equipment that's more comfortable for the patient (and works at least as well as the older ones).

Yeah, you definitely shouldn't bruise. But, as Trying said, maybe you bruise easy.

I had some red marks, but that was it.

Re: Mammogram Worries

Funny you should mention that, because the first time I had a mammogram I thought how "painless" it seemed. Then the second time I had it, I had it at a hospital and the machinery definitely looked older and THAT'S when I was in alot of discomfort.

Then again, I do bruise easily.....

Anyway, after reading all of this, I'm going back to the original place I had my first mammogram - they even gave you big fuzzy white bathrobes to hang around in with a cup of hot tea while you waited - can't beat that!

Yes! That's the way it is at the hospital I go to! They have a Women's Health Center, where the mammograms are done, and you get a robe, sit in this beautiful lounge with soft music playing, and there's coffee and tea. It's like being at the spa!

Be sure and have copies of all subsequent mammograms and any other relevant tests sent to the original place. Don't let them give you any crap when you request them -- you're entitled to do this!

Let us know how things go!

Re: Mammogram Worries

Well, I had the second mammogram and an ultrasound yesterday. I'm scheduled for a biopsy on Wednesday. Evidently, they think I have a fibroadenoma, with is very common and usually harmless. But, they want to be safe.

So, needless to say, I'm a nervous wreck, not about the procedure, but about the results. Man, I just want some peace and quiet this summer. I shouldn't have gotten my first mammogram so soon after Poppy passing. But, live and learn.

Re: Mammogram Worries

Dang it Laurie!!! That kind of crap just sends me over the edge. That's why I HATE to go for medical tests of any kind. They always find something "weird" that merits further checking, which of course freaks me out while I'm waiting to have the test, and then waiting for the results, which have turned out to be nothing. And I'm glad it's all been fine but the waiting is horrible!!! I'm sure it is ALL fine, but you don't need this crap right now. I'm sorry.
