New to Paxil - Should I take?

Hi. I have just been prescribed Paxil for mild depression from my Neurolologist and am very hestitant to begin taking this. From some of what I've read in here and the problems people have when they decide to stop taking it really worries me.

Does Paxil help? Are the downsides worst than the upsides (if any?)

I've gone through a lot over the past 2 years with dizziness and some health issues no one can find the answer to, which of course caused some depression. Try living dizzy 24/7 and see if that doesn't depress you!

Anyhow, input? I took it for only 3 days and experienced insomonia and anxiety. I stopped taking it 2 days ago after reading some information on this site.

any input would be very much appreciated.

Thanks
Sue

Re: New to Paxil - Should I take?

Welcome, Sue!

If dizziness is an issue for you, Paxil isn't what you want, that's for sure! Coming off of it will give you the worst vertigo you've ever experienced!

Also, if you experienced those side effects in just three days, there's a BIG red flag to stay away!

The cons far outweigh the pros and I'm not going to list them all, based on what I just told you. Again, side effects after three days? It can only get worse for you.

Everyting LC said! Ryan, my son, is still having dizzyness problems 3 years off Paxil, and this is one of the easier things that he's had to deal with.

Re: New to Paxil - Should I take?

Welcome, Sue. There's a hypothesis that as many as one in ten people lacks the correct pathway in the liver to properly metabolize psychotropic drugs. As a result such people get all the side effects and none of the efficacy. I'd take the insomnia and anxiety as a warning sign and dump the Paxil. Don't be surprised if your doctor tells you that you need to stay on it, though, that the side effects will go away with time; or that you need another drug, like a benzo, to manage the side effects of Paxil. Not true!!! I was like you, never got any benefit from the drug, but I stuck it out for 10 months and had a difficult, protracted withdrawal. Mild depression is very manageable with therapy (including techniques in some books) and lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise. Many members have found benefit in supplements like fish oil, though some of us are too sensitive. Search the Methods of Wellbeing section for info on supplements, and do a search on the member name Scott and follow the links in his signature for some good self-help tools.

Thank you all for your responses. You've made up my mind for me. I'm also seeing a Homeopatic Nutrionist (have only had one appointment so far), so I'll see what she may suggest. No Paxil for me!

Thanks again.

Good for you..you don't want to start a road to hell..this drug will take you there in short order...dizziness is one of Paxil's signature traits..so if its bad for you now.. magnify this by 10..along with a whole host of other horrors that will make you regret the very day you took that cute little pill.

Paxil is poison...your doing well to seek healthy alternatives.

Regards, Johnny

Sue -- so glad you decided against it and kudos to you for seeking out alternatives. One of our posters here, PMFlaherty, was prescribed Paxil 11 or so years ago for unexplained dizziness. What that young man has gone through and is going through is horrendous. It just pisses me off to no end how doctors are STILL handing out Paxil like it was the cure-all to everything that ails us..........GRRRRRRRRRR.

Focus your attention on the here and now. Recognize it for what it is: the one moment of the only life you will ever have that you truly possess. Rare is the individual who has come to completely accept that the past is no more than a memory and the future an assumption about unborn events.

Praise God, Sue! You've made the right choice! But, we invite you to stick around the board too. Your choice and the reason you made it, could be of inspiration to the next new person who comes here.

Re: New to Paxil - Should I take?

I'll be around. I'm so glad I found this site. I had discontinued taking it, but then went looking for information before thinking about taking it again. I wanted to know about side effects, etc. I have to say I was shocked at all of the stories about addiction to Paxil, side effects, etc. I don't like taking pills anyhow. Good luck to all of you trying to wean yourself off.

Sue
