metabolism and hair

I was on paxil for a year and gained 14kg. I stopped taking it October 05

In March 06 I started to lose hair and after lots of blood tests it was decided it was due to low iron stores. After taking iron supplements the hair loss stopped.

My iron stores are now restored and I havent had any hair regrowth of the lost hair yet. Ive been taking the iron for a year.

I was wondering if my metabolism is any way connected to the lack of regrowth (the rest of my hair is shedding and replacing as normal) I have only recently started to lose the weight. Lost about 7kgs and my metabolism is starting to pick up.

Do you think there is any connection between a slow metabolism and my hair not growing back yet.

My thyroid tests were normal. I am 44 female

Re: metabolism and hair

There could be, but it could also be a menopausal thing. Women lose hair during menopause.

Re: metabolism and hair

Yeah I did think that but I only lost hair for a few months last year and once onto the iron it stopped and has been stable since. Sometimes I wonder if my anxiety is the cause.

Re: metabolism and hair

You know, there are so many reasons for thinning hair. It's truly hard to figure out an exact cause. But, you've started losing weight, so hopefully, this will work itself out too.

Congrats, Cinderella! I'm glad to hear your metabolism is getting back to normal, I know you've been struggling with that for awhile.

Re: metabolism and hair

Thanks ann06 I have lost 6kg in 6 months, unfortunately I think its mainly because I have been suffering anxiety for the last 6 months also Im seriously thinking of going back on meds after trying natural methods with no success. My doc thinks the lack of hair regrowth is probably because I am in peri menopause, however I think its prob more likely my anxiety?

Re: metabolism and hair

Is it possible the peri menopause is a factor in the anxiety?

Re: metabolism and hair

Hi Cinder -- I gained weight and lost hair on Paxil. At approximately one year post-taper, I lost some weight and gained some hair. But, then the improvement stalled. I am now 28 months post-taper. I feel pretty confident that it's just a matter of more time until there is further improvement, since all of my other symptoms are s-l-o-w-l-y improving. Of note, my head itches in the area of greatest hair loss -- upper left.

Re: metabolism and hair

Cinderella, have you thought about going to a Chinese medicine practitioner/herbalist? I think I have written that to you in another post. I was having horrid anxiety, esp right before my periods. I was given a formula based on traditional Chinese medicine, and it worked wonders! I know your anxiety might be different than mine, but it might be interesting to try.
