Yep, it does get better but just a couple of days ago I experienced it again and it was like, "Oh yeah I'd forgotten about that." I still have it a bit today but less so than before.

Re: metallic taste in mouth

I had this for quite a while while I was still on paxil. I told my doctor it tasted like I was sucking on pocket change. We never connected it with paxil, so I find this interesting.

My doctor believed it was due to a large number of old, corroding amalgam fillings in my teeth. Those amalgams had been there for many decades and were starting to crack, so I had to have them replaced, and I replaced them (with very safe methods) with very low-toxicity synthetics (some synthetic fillings are as toxic as amalgams, I learned the hard way!) and then had a year of oral chelation. This was before I started going off paxil.

I haven't had the metallic taste since then, or if I did have it in early w/d, it would have been so slight I didn't pay attention to it. I have no idea now whether the problem was caused just by the heavy metal toxicity or whether paxil made my sytem more sensitive to it. Both being on paxil and particularly withdrawal certainly has made my body hypersensitive to many things, so there may be a connection there.

Re: metallic taste in mouth

Well I know that it is not fillings or dental work because I have never had a cavity - lol. I will be sooooooooo glad when I no longer subscribe to the "Symptom of the Day Club".

Actually, I had all these fillings put in when my "permanent teeth" first grew in; the dentist said the enamel was thin and giving me a mouthful of fillings would prevent future problems. Unfortunately it seemed to have caused lifelong health problems for me -- it was soon after that I went from being an extremely healthy child to having a succession of serious health problems. My doctor thinks I may have an allergy or sensitivity to some of the components of those fillings, and there is no way to completely remove them all from my system. You're so fortunate to have never needed fillings! (There are other ways we get toxic metals in our bodies, but those fillings are the worst, since chewing and swallowing causes traces to be breathed in and swallowed.)

But I've read a few other references to metallic taste in w/d, so there must be a reason for it, like all the million and one other weird things we experience in w/d and recovery!

Re: metallic taste in mouth

I am getting the weird smell thing too. We were driving along yesterday and I swore that I smelled Play Doh. I asked my hubby "do you smell Play-Doh?" - he looked at me like I had grown a second head (which would not be good because both heads would probably smell different things and that would be really bad).

Re: metallic taste in mouth

Oh gosh, I used to have that metallic taste thing quite often - but I too thought it was all my fillings.

But I have ALWAYS (paxil or no paxil) "found" smells. I'll walk in somewhere and say "it smells like the parking lot at Six Flags" or "hey, it smells like the Haunted Mansion at Disney World!" "smells like grandma's road in spring" or "smells like that store we went to in Rome!" I don't know where I get it from - and can't believe after a decade of smoking my sense of smell is STILL very acute.

Re: metallic taste in mouth

Even when I was a kid, I'd notice strong smells that nobody else was aware of. The smells would seem overpowering, but nobody else seemed to notice them. I haven't noticed it more in w/d, but it must be something neurologically out of whack in sensory perceptions in either case.

As for the metallic taste, if someone who never had a filling gets this, it can't be caused from that, though we get heavy metals in our bodies from other sources (including eating seafood or kelp products if they aren't from mercury-free water and tested for heavy metals). When I had the strong metallic taste (while still on paxil, not w/d, as I posted about earlier), I mentioned it to my doctor and also mentioned that it was worse when I sat near a lamp. I had switched to compact fluorescent bulbs for the lamp, and they contain mercury.

It didn't seem possible that just being near a lamp could cause that strong metallic taste (hey, I wasn't sucking on the bulb) but my doctor said that another doctor he knew got this every time he was under fluorescent bulbs. That doctor didn't use fluorescents at home, but he first noticed it when he was giving a speech and there were fluorescent fixtures overhead.

I stopped using compact fluorescents and also had my amalgams removed, and now I rarely have a metallic taste, and when I do it's so slight it's barely noticeable, while before (as I mentioned) it was like I was sucking on pocket change.

My mercury-free dentist told me he doesn't use any fluorescents or CFLs in his office, because many of his patients are mercury sensitive and it bothers them.
