Re: Have I dropped too quickly or is this normal
I know I have been an idiot - just been feeling so desperate for sleep. Phoned in sick at work today, think I'll do the same tommorrow. Just so very tired now and feel constantly twitchy.
Feeling very disappointed in myself at the moment and struggling to feel jolly. |

Re: Have I dropped too quickly or is this normal
Don't know if anyone will read this as it's not a new message but I thought I'd give it a go anyway.
Having a terrible time. Not sleeping, can't eat, struggling to do anything normal. Went back to docs on Thurs as only had 2 1./2 hours sleep, so they've given me some sleeping tablets for a few days, had some bleak thoughts on Wed night, wanted to die basically. Told this to the doctor but she didn't seem overly concerned. Feel terrible, exhausted, panicky, can't cope. I've been taking the paxil for more than a few days now and thought I'd start feeling a little better but don't as yet. What should I do? |

Re: Have I dropped too quickly or is this normal
Have you tried benedryl (antihistimine) for sleep? I would recommend that before any of the other things they might give you like ambien or lunesta. Those are addictive and have terrible side effects. I would also recommend going back on 5 or 10mg of paxil and see if that helps. It's worth a shot if you are feeling this badly. Better to go back on the med you know than treat withdrawal by starting a new addiction (sleeping pills).

Re: Have I dropped too quickly or is this normal
Claire, what dose of paxil and of other meds have you been taking lately? I'm confused (I thought you'd gone back on paxil at about 10 recently, but I'm not sure). Be sure and stay at a dose you're stable at for a while before weaning further.
Remember that these things take a bit of time to take effect, and that some withdrawal symptoms can take a while to appear also, though they can be mitigated to some extent by certain supplements. And they will subside in time. Don't be disappointed in yourself. All the feelings you describe are normal for a while in withdrawal. Don't push yourself to be jolly. In a lot of ways, withdrawal is like being sick - you have to do whatever works to get through it, and like being sick, it runs its course and then you start feeling better. There are some things that help many people feel better, but you still have to give your body time to heal. Please don't be so hard on yourself! Just like when you're sick (or when you're taking care of someone who is), the focus has to be on nurturing (norturing yourself in this case), not on pressuring.

Re: Have I dropped too quickly or is this normal
Are you still taking 10mg a day? As for the thoughts of wanting to die, and so on, I went through similar last New Year, I now think it was from tapering my dose too quickly. After I put my dose up, it took two to three weeks to feel okay again. Try to be patient, a few days is probably not long enough to stabilise yet.

Re: Have I dropped too quickly or is this normal
I've gone up to 20mg per day. Still feeling pretty crap to be honest. The sleeping tablet I was given is called Zopiclone over here, 2 x 7.5mg tablets. But I've only got one table left now so it will just be one tablet tonight which I'm honestly quite nervous about. The what if I don't sleep thing is really scarry for me, it makes life so much harder without sleep.
I really was convinced that I should be in hospital as I'm completely out of control anxiety wise. Any responsiblity I have at the moment just feels too much to cope with. Feel big failure, rubbish mum and even worse wife. |

Re: Have I dropped too quickly or is this normal
I think it's important to catch up on some sleep, sleep deprivation can get you very run-down and makes everything worse. I found zopiclone worked very well for me, it gave a good quality sleep, almost as good as a natural sleep. How long have you been taking it? Two tablets is quite a big dose. If you still have trouble sleeping, you could maybe get some more, and try weaning down to one tablet for a while, and then half a tablet. I never take any sleeping pill for longer than six weeks, as they can all cause dependence. After that you might be able to switch over to a non-drug remedy like valerian.
After my crash at New Year, I went back up to 20mg too. It took about three weeks for me to feel better, so stay on the same dose and give it some time. I'm sorry you're feeling so bad right now. Please try not to beat yourself up for not feeling well - you are NOT a big failure, you are NOT a rubbish mum or wife!!! You're doing the best you can in a difficult situation!

Re: Have I dropped too quickly or is this normal
Tried to sleep without anything on tues night, was completely round the twist the next day. Had a tremendous urge to fling myself on the floor at the doctors and plead for help when I went back to the GP's, but he gave me some - I'm pretty sure that I've had all I'm going to get now. I saw the gp again today and she told me to take just one tonight and see how I go - I've actually become quite phobic about not getting sleep now. Feel so much worse without it.
The GP also mentioned that I might need to be on paxil at a low dose for life which isn't a fantatstic prospect. |

Re: Have I dropped too quickly or is this normal
This is a telling statement. Just like anxiety, the fear of it creates the problem. Sleep in withdrawal is a HUGE problem. Ryan sleep patterns took a LONG time to regulate, and still aren't "normal". For him it was easier since he was a kid with no responsibilities, so he slept when he could regardless of what time of the day it was. I wish I had answers for this, but again it comes down to time.
