Why no calcium with magnesium?

I had bought a long time ago the Natural Calm with Calcium, but read on here that its best not to have it together. How come? It has helped me to sleep better the last few nights. Just wondering if I should get it without it.

Thanks,
Hollie

Re: Why no calcium with magnesium?

If it's working for you don't worry about it. Calcium can decrease magnesiums absorption.

Re: Why no calcium with magnesium?

Huh?? That doesn't make sense...
Magnesium is added to calcium tablets to increase absorption of the calcium, and since they enter the body together I don't see how one would be reduced and not the other...

Re: Why no calcium with magnesium?

Hollie, calcium sometimes does help people sleep better because it aids in muscles' ability to contract and relax normally. My legs ache terribly at times, mostly at night, and I've found that taking calcium helps.

Re: Why no calcium with magnesium?

I read that taking a lot of magnesium on its own without calcium can cause an imbalance in the body, i.e. depletion of calcium. I think that is why magnesium supplements usually come with some calcium in them.

Re: Why no calcium with magnesium?

I read that calcium and magnesium compete with each other to be absorbed, so they are both most effective if you take them separately (rather than at the same time). But, it is good to take both because they complement each other.

My question is -- how many hours should you wait at a minimum to take one after taking the other (so if you take magnesium first, how many hours at least should you wait to take calcium)?

Re: Why no calcium with magnesium?

2:1 ratio calcium to magnesium is the best I heard and I use it.

I use cal-mag it contains 600/300 mgs respectively. One half in morning and one half in evening.

There is good brand, which is Great Earth which has special forms of composition with the both which help increase the absorption alot. Portamins

Re: Why no calcium with magnesium?

I have taken both types and found that magnesium on it's own made me more relaxed with better sleeps then the one with calcium...does anyone know why this is?
