Good meeting with the physciatrist
I had an appointment with my Physiatrist and today and things went pretty well. I told him that I have discontinued the Lexapro and have gone back to 20mg of paxil. I told him that I want to stabilize over the next month or two and then start my journey of slowly tapering off paxil over the next year or two. He admitted that such a long taper is very foreign to him but said he would support my decision.
He also agreed to write a prescription for compounding the paxil into custom doses (1mg decreases) but admitted that he had never done this before. He asked that if he were going to write these prescriptions, he wanted the name of the pharmacist I would be using so that he can discuss what they need from him on the prescription sheet. He also asked that I keep using the same pharmacist so that everyone is kept in the loop if someone goes one holidays. I am pretty excited that my appointment went the way it did. I could tell that there was doubt in the doctor’s mind but he still decided to support my wishes. He did say that he did not want to see me set my self up for failure and that I may need to be on medications indefinitely. I did not tell him that I thought that was absolutely ridiculous, as I do need his services for my taper prescriptions. I also will start CBT with a psychologist this month, which is covered by my provincial healthcare (you got to love Canada). With that and the support of this site, I know that I can complete this journey. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Re: Good meeting with the physciatrist
Well first off your attitude and outlook is a great foundation for success...it looks like you know what you are doing..nice to know that some physciatrists are actually caring people rather then just perscitpion authors.....
Keep this positive attitdue along with you...and you will rock......now about them Oilers....hmmmmmmm...opps or are you a flames fan?

Homerbcool, I am a Oilers fan. Our success in the nineties probably added to my anxiety! Probably the same for you. LOL.

Re: Good meeting with the physciatrist
Awesome!! A doc doesn't have to totally agree with a plan to support it. You found a good one!
And keeping the pharmacist in the loop is a great idea. Hopefully this will start to educate pharmacists too!

Re: Good meeting with the physciatrist
How do you feel about him saying that you may need to be on medications indefinitely? Just wondering..
Sounds like you have a great psychiatrist. I'd stick with this one being that a good or half way decent psychiatrist is next to impossible to find (especially where I'm from). |

Re: Good meeting with the physciatrist
I had the same experience with my GP last week. I told her that I want to get off Paxil completely. By the way I started crying because of how anxious I've been feeling lately. SHe yold me that even though it looks like the Paxil isn't working for me anymore(surprise, surprise!!!) that I would probably need to take some sort of anxiety med for the rest of my life. I told I did not want to be on any kind of anxiety meds. She gave me this B.S about how some people have a chemical imbalnce and need to be on meds for the rest of their live to help with the imbalance. Total crap!!! I like you did not argue with her. These doctors they're useless when it comes to these issues.

Wow since95, how lucky you are to find a physciatrist who is willing to support your plans! Sounds like you have a great plan in place.
