New here

Hello all , i would like to introduce myself , i'm flood, a recovering alcoholic, benzo survivor, and now dealing with paxil....i was only on paxil for about 1 month 2 weeks, and was talking to a friend whom told, that paxil is hell to withdrawal from... So immediatly i went to my doctor and told him i wanted off of this med, i can so vivdly remember withdrawing from alcohol , then the one month of benzos the quack doctor told me to take for that long...ativan to make it worse , a short acting benzo.... my quack doctor told me to take my current dose *20mgs* drop it to 10 mgs for 3 days then quit...so i did was fine for about 3 days ... then i started to feel sick and was having strange thoughts.... so i took 5mgs and felt better,, then eventually had to go to 10 mgs, and feel kinda normal again, sorry i'm kinda blah here .. lol, can a person have withdrawal symptoms after such a short us? And i'm also worried the doctor wont prescribe a smaller dose , i bought a pill cutter, but cutting those big 40 mgs tabs * which the doctor gave me to save money , or so he says* is kinda hard to get exact doses,, anyway thanks for reading and suggestions are more than welcome

Regards

Flood

Re: New here

Flood, welcome.

How are you feeling at the moment and what is your current dosage on Paxil. Are you still on the benzo? It would help to know what you are currently on..and how you are feeling.

There are a lot of people who can help you! We welcome you and hang in!

Re: New here

Sorry to ask, but how long have you been on the 10mg dose?

Congrats on being off the benzo and the alcohol by the way!

Re: New here

Welcome, Flood!!

Yes, you absolutely can have w/d after only a month's use. The good news is, you've only been on it that long and you're only going to be dropping from 10 mgs, so tapering off should be a little easier.

We recommend 10% of your current dose every 3-6 weeks. But, in your case, you shouldn't have to taper that slowly, as it appears you've only been on a couple of months. Obviously though, you can't taper as quickly as your doctor recommended.

See if your doc won't prescribe you liquid Paxil. That would make doing this a breeze, as far as measuring. If not, hopefully he'll at least prescribe you 10 mg pills.

We're here to help in any way we can! Best of luck to you!

Re: New here

Ok, so if I were you, I'd just be sure I'm stable on the 10 mgs - not for too long though, just long enough to see if you can either get the liquid, or 10 mgs pills - and start tapering from there.

Here's where it gets a little tricky. You'll have to experiment with how much to drop, although I wouldn't drop any more than 2.5 mgs at a time, and with how long to wait between drops.

Again, you haven't been on that long, so there's no need to make this a long, drawn out thing. But, it's obvious that even after this short time, you have to be somewhat cautious. Just listen to your body.

Re: New here

What Laurie said is how you should begin Flood....stay on 10mgs until you can get a scrip for 10mg pills, but ideally, you should get the liquid as it is much easier to control the tapering that way.

10% of 10mgs is 1mg...that is how much you should drop if you really want to be strict about the dosage taper, but as Laurie said, don't go beyond 2.5 mgs.

You have the fortune of being on the stuff a short time so as soon as you are ready to taper, listen to your body and taper accordingly.

They don't make a 5 mg pill.

Paxil actually can make you crave alcohol and that's written in the warning insert! I can't believe your doctor wouldn't know something like that!

Re: New here

Boy that was on symptom I'm so glad I never had. In fact, the first week I was on paxil I had a glass of wine and that about made me pass out...I never touched the stuff during my paxil usage/wean/ and well after post taper.

And yeah, I think the smallest dosage is 10mgs.

Re: New here

I drank a lot more than normal, when I was on. It wasn't I drank constantly, but when I did, I drank a lot.

A 1omg pill can be cut in quarters for a 2.5mg dose.
