Newbie Poster Here

Um...hello.

My name is Rainer. I'm a 40 year old (fat) man. I live in the Chicago-land area and have been taking Paxil (both the regular and CR (not at the same time)) for about, oh, I don't even know, lets just say around 10 years or so.

At the moment, I don't have any health insurance. This is not the first time. The last time, I ran out of pills and honestly couldn't afford to go to the Dr. for a new prescription nor could I afford the pills anyway. So I decided to quit cold-turkey. After about a month or two of the flu-like symptoms and headaches, things seemed to level off and life went on. Then out of nowhere, I got a chronic case of what I call 'the dizzies'. I tried to just deal with it, but it got to the point that it was SO exhausting and I was just miserable. Anyway, by then I got a new job and health insurance so I went back to the Dr. and started up again.

Since then, I'm on 25mg Paxil CR daily. Not surprisingly, I am now again without work and without insurance (trend anyone?).

I want to get off the meds, but I'm terrified of going thru all that again and then only return to the panic attacks that necessitated the pills in the first place.

So, I don't know, I guess I just wanted to say 'hi'. I'm scared.

Welcome, Rainer!

Your situation is certainly a difficult one. Are you able to get the generic Paxil? I know some drug stores carry generics for only $4.

Re: Newbie Poster Here

Hi Rainier! You may have ended up feeling miserable because of quitting cold turkey. To get off this time, you could wean off very slowly. They recommend here cutting by no more than 10% of current dose every 4 to 6 weeks. This doesn't mean there will be no withdrawal symptoms, but will help to minimise them. Also, there are non-med ways to deal with panic attacks, so try not to feel that you absolutely need the pills.
