new here

Hello,

I just registered for this forum last night, but I am very glad I found it.

I've been taking 20mg of Paxil since October 30, 2002. I was 17 at the time and was experiencing severe social anxiety...especially surrounding public speaking, but also just existing in general. I was an extrovert and not socially uncomfortable at all until 7th grade...so I wasn't dealing with the changes very well.

Last year (May 2007) I decided to stop taking it...not cold turkey, but started going every other day...big big big mistake. I experienced lots of side effects. I felt very panicked (which was not something I'd experienced before), I was very nauseous and dizzy. I would get 'brain zaps' when I looked to either side. Moving my eyes or head too fast left me with a disgusting spinning feeling. I'm sure you all have an idea of what I'm describing.

I decided against pursuing discontinuation because I was getting ready to move 7 hours from home to attend graduate school and didn't want the anxiety that I had so happily left behind to return.

I just turned 23 a few weeks ago. I'm in graduate school and doing very well. I feel that I am at a completely different point in my life than I was at 17. I've made an appointment for May when I go home with my psychiatrist to talk about stopping it. I'm planning to follow the cut back schedule that someone so kindly made on this site. I was on prozac for a time and didn't like how I felt, so I don't think switching to another SSRI is a great option for me.

Sorry that got lengthy, just wanted to introduce myself!

That's good to hear. I'd hate to start the process all over with another medication. I will be half way done in May. I will graduate in May of 09 I'm just going home for the summer and figure that would be a prime time to deal with the withdrawal.

I love that dog in your signature!

Re: new here

Just remember to use the taper schedule sheet take it to your doctor and tell him you want the liquid paxil. And that you will be dropping by 10% I would say once a month. Not sure if yiu are a male or female but if female put your monthly cycle into play and drop 5 days after it starts.

Aww I wish I could have a pet here, but it's too expensive.

I'm in a Public Health masters program. I love it I hope to work for the National Institutes of Health or the Centers for Disease Control...or the like.

I'm awake because I just finished a paper and decided to relax a few minutes before I hop in bed

Yes I am going to ask for the liquid. I wasn't even aware that was available until I found this forum haha. I am a girl, so I will keep the period factor in mind! I never would have thought of that either.

Welcome to PP!

Good idea to be prepared when you go to talk to your psychiatrist. Remember that he/she may not be well-informed about the need for a slow taper.

Be your own advocate.
