Equivalent dosages of Paxil to Lexapro

Hello,

My girlfriend is switching from Paxil to Lexapro. She is on SSRIs for OCD. The Paxil was not working for her anymore. The psychiatrist is weaning her off Paxil over a two month period, with the starting dosage of 20mg of Paxil daily and ending with 30mg of Lexapro daily.

On one of the posts here I read that 20 mg of Paxil is equivalent to 10mg of Lexapro. I am concerned that the 30mg ending dosage of Lexapro might be too high. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience in the dosage equivalencies?

Also, if anybody is in the Southern California area, I was trying to set up a support group. Please see post at: http://www.paxilprogress.org/forums/...ad.php?t=38854

Thank you for your input!

Re: Equivalent dosages of Paxil to Lexapro

I believe that lexapro 10mg is equivalent to Paxil 20mg. You need to know that switching to a new drug usually does not prevent Paxil withdrawal symptoms.
30mg of Lexapro is 10mg above the recommended dose for Lexapro. Effectiveness over 10mg was not found, according to the manufacturer. So in effect he is increasing her dose by a massive amount, and not recognizing the potential withdrawal. Not a good choice.

From rxlist.com:

Initial Treatment
The recommended dose of Lexapro is 10 mg once daily. A fixed-dose trial of Lexapro demonstrated the effectiveness of both 10 mg and 20 mg of Lexapro, but failed to demonstrate a greater benefit of 20 mg over 10 mg (see Clinical Efficacy Trials under CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY). If the dose is increased to 20 mg, this should occur after a minimum of one week.

Re: Equivalent dosages of Paxil to Lexapro

Thank you for your response! The psychiatrist seems to have given her a very high dosage according to rxlist.com.

I am aware of the withdrawal as it is quite bad at this time. She stopped taking Paxil because of severe side effects. In addition, her body is getting use to this new drug Lexapro. What a mess!

It's kind of like comparing apples to oranges.
I work in pharmacy and one time years ago a customer was complaining because her Claritin was only 10mg, whereas her daughter's Allegra was 180mg ;and so therefore hers couldn't be much good.

But if you look at "recommended dose" for effectiveness, Paxil is 20 and Lexapro is 10. So to go from 20 of paxil to 30 of Lexapro(which would be about 60 of Paxil) is a huge increase. Plus doses about 10mg of Lexapro are shown to have no increased effectiveness....why would one go up to 30?

Re: Equivalent dosages of Paxil to Lexapro

How long was she on Paxil? It is possible that she hit "poop out" aka tolerance and that is what brought on the horrible side effects. I do however question the fact that he has her on an SSRI for OCD. I know that this is a common practice but Paxil actually made my OCD a million times worse.
