Fish oil and gas?

Now I've read the comments on too much fish oil causing "oily poo," but what about gas? I've been taking 2 fish oil capsules with a meal once a day and have noticed that for up to 8 hours afterward my stomach will just start gurgling and making odd noises and such. Or my stomach will feel that burning sensation you get when you're hungry, even though I've eaten recently. It even wakes me up at night. Does anyone else experience this? Could it be the quality of the fish oil capsules I bought? They were pretty cheap and don't even have exact DHA and EHA levels, it just says it has both and they add up to 720mg. Any suggestions?

Re: Fish oil and gas?

I take mine on an empty stomach, so you may want to try that. And yes, if it's cheap, it's probably got a lot of fillers in it, which may be causing you trouble.

Yeah, I'm thinking this is the problem. I'll just buy some different ones at Whole Foods since I know they have a large fish oil selection. Thanks.

Re: Fish oil and gas?

I wrote in another thread ("fish oil") that I've had some pretty bad problems with gas also, which I think is from the fish oil. And I've been taking Nordic Naturals, which is supposed to be one of the purest brands. Laurie, I've read that you're supposed to take it WITH food; is that wrong? Is taking it on an empty stomach better?

Re: Fish oil and gas?

I've always taken mine on an empty stomach and never had any problems. Try taking it about half an hour before you eat in the morning, see if that makes a difference.

The only time I ever have problems is when I take too much, so you may also consider taking half of the recommended dose and work your way up.

I also think, while you're tapering, your digestive system is VERY sensitive. Almost the entire time I tapered, my stomach made the most hideous noises in the morning, for at least an hour or so upon waking. It had nothing to do with anything I took, ate, or drank.

Re: Fish oil and gas?

I also have have experienced severe problems of gas, bloating, cramping and abdominal pain on my left side. I had suspected that it might be related to the fish oil but was not sure. I take mine after a meal since I was told it needs to be taken with food. I take one 1000 mg =line capsule after lunch. The gas problems surprisingly start much later. I also experience waking up with gas and discomfort. I have seen two gastros about this problem and none of them pointed to fish oil. I was told I had IBS.

Now that I read the posts in this thread I wonder if it is the fish oil...

LC what do you mean by tapering? Do you experience these symptoms when you start off on fish oil and then it goes away?

Re: Fish oil and gas?

I was referring to tapering Paxil. I've never experienced these symptoms with fish oil.

However, if you have IBS, that's probably your bigger culprit, not the fish oil.
