Question about heart arrhythmias

To anyone who knows anything about heart arrhythmias. About a week ago I had two nights of horrible palpitations.

I have had strange heartbeats occasionally in the past, even years before drugs, where my heart would seem to skip a beat, and if I took my pulse it felt like it was kind of whirring. My doctor mentioned it once, I can't remember what he said it was called, but he said it was very common and was harmless.

But the other night felt different. It felt like my heart was fluttering in my chest, and if I took my pulse, every six to ten beats it would do two beats very close together, I guess that was causing the fluttering feeling. So rather than a missed beat it was like an extra beat without a proper gap in between.

Well, I survived and it went away, so I guess it wasn't anything too serious, but I'd like to know what it was, if it has a name, if anyone else gets this. I don't know what caused it, I can only guess it was just another w/d symptom.

Re: Question about heart arrhythmias

Premature ventricular contractions, or PVC's. An occasional one isn't a problem and happens to everyone. It's when there are 3-4-5 in a row that there should be concern. Most of the time its due to low potassium

Re: Question about heart arrhythmias

Thank you, Scotty! I'm guessing this is common in withdrawal, although I haven't had very much heart stuff so far myself. I was a bit worried when it was back the second night, but then the next night it had gone so I stopped worrying.

Re: Question about heart arrhythmias

Interesting, after doing some date checking, seems this could be cycle-related. So could be caused by hormones, or maybe hormones plus w/d interaction.

Re: Question about heart arrhythmias

Hmm, have had the palps every night for a while now, so maybe it isn't hormones after all. I finished my last magnesium months ago and didn't buy any more as I didn't think it was doing anything, but who knows, maybe it was. So a couple of days ago I finally bought some magnesium, took some last two nights, maybe it will help.

Re: Question about heart arrhythmias

Good luck with the magnesium, its supposed to help with heart beat regulation...so I'm hoping it works for you. Maybe try eating a banana or something high in potassium at night and see if that has any effect?

I've been having these palpitations too for the past week, isn't that strange. I guess it is withdrawal.

Re: Question about heart arrhythmias

Thanks, Nickels, I'm thinking I may need to get in some high potassium foods. The palps have been getting worse and more frequent. I don't know if the magnesium is helping, but I'm continuing to take it anyway.

Re: Question about heart arrhythmias

When I went to the cardiologist during withdrawal because of heart issues I was having, he told me my magnesium levels were low and put me on magnesium. He said if a regular doctor looked at my levels they wouldn't think they were low but they were on the low end of normal and they were low in his opinion because of the rhythm issues I was having. It did help.

Re: Question about heart arrhythmias

Well, I've been taking 200mg magnesium citrate twice a day for the past couple of weeks, and the palps have gradually reduced in frequency and severity, they are now very mild and I only notice them late at night. I'm thinking I may have been very magnesium deficient.
