I wandered if these drugs, all the ant-depressants, do they shorten people's lives obviously if people kill themselves, but anyone know if it does this, if you do please explain, again thanks everyone

Re: Do SSRI's Shorten Lifespan?

No one can answer this. There is no research into it and the drugs aren't on the market long enough to determine this.

Re: Do SSRI's Shorten Lifespan?

Hi Shane,

Who knows, no-one knows how long they are going to live with or without an ssri, and how do you prove it. If you have been on an ssri and die, no-one knows how long they might have lived if they hadnt taken it. There is no proof, heck if the studies on this drug didnt cover w/d hell, it sure isnt gonna cover death!!!!

Why worry buddy, one day when the great book is opened up above it will have your name on the page, and there is not a lot you can do about it, its a sure thing that it will happen, but no-one knows when- so i dont think it has any relevance as to wether you have taken ssri's or not, it will be your work completed on earth, your job here is done my friend and nothing else.

Re: Do SSRI's Shorten Lifespan?

Here's the way I look at it: There are so many things that "could" shorten your lifespan. We have to worry about all the crap that's put into our food, water, other meds, the over use of anti biotics, the air we breathe, the lifestyles we live....The best we can do is take care of ourselves as best we can and not dwell on it.

Because these drugs wreak so much havoc, in so many ways, I can certainly understand the wondering about it. But, there's really no proof or real way of knowing. And, there are/were other drugs that actually have killed or harmed people a lot worse than these drugs - Celebrex, Zelnorm, Vioxx, etc. - so that's another thing to think about too.

Re: Do SSRI's Shorten Lifespan?

While living for today I also think of how many bullets I have already missed by taking Celebrex, Zelnorm, Vioxx yep every single one makes me wonder if big pharma thought I would be better off dead.

As for living for today while it is the only game in town to those sufferring wd right now it is tricky depending on the stage of wd. Think of the future if you can muster it is what kept me going as many days I was just getting thru. While we may have a shortened life it is still our lives and we have to make the most of it as there is no other viable choice.
To those of you still in the grips it will pass you have a future don't give up.

Re: Do SSRI's Shorten Lifespan?

Hmm. I used to ask this when I was first put on them all those years ago...would they shorten my life?

I don't think they do actually... but I agree it's not something we should dwell on, as it can probably never be proved.

A friend of my Mother's has been on them since they first came out, and is a really sprightly 83 year old. Amazingly too, she has been on the same one for years, with no poop out...and no weight gain.

Re: Do SSRI's Shorten Lifespan?

Actually, it never crossed my mind until I saw it here! I agree with LC, there are just so many factors involved in determining lifespan. Even then you could be crossing the road and get hit by a bus. It is not something I want to dwell on as it would just make my anxiety worse!
