has anyone quit at 5mgs?

i'm at 5 mgs and i'm thinking of quitting rather than continuing the taper. it's getting harder and harder to cut down my pills.

Re: has anyone quit at 5mgs?

If it was me then I would NOT stop at 5 mg. You started your taper in December at 30 mg so that would mean that you went from 30 to zero in a little of six months. That is pretty fast.

My dumb ace doctor refused to prescribe me the liquid because I wouldn't follow the drug reps "tapering schedule", so I chopped pills for my entire taper. The easier way to do it is with a pill cutter and one of those handy little pill containers with the days of the month on them. I would sit at my dining room table and chop out doses. From 5 mg I went down to 3.75 - so that was a quarter of a 10 mg pill plus an eighth of a 10 mg pill. If I had tried to cut them down every morning it would have been impossible for me to keep up with.

Re: has anyone quit at 5mgs?

Don't do it! That's what I did and it was a nightmare. I can also think of at least a few members with severe protracted withdrawal who quit at 5 mg. The last 5 mg is often the hardest, so it's worth it to taper slowly.

Re: has anyone quit at 5mgs?

Jean I would say definitely dont stop at 5 mg. Can you try getting liquid paxil for the rest of your taper. It will definitely make it easier with the liquid.

Re: has anyone quit at 5mgs?

I went into severe w/d going from 5mg to 4.5mg, so stopping at 5mg doesn't seem like an option for me, I'm trying a slower taper this time. Because I can't get liquid here, I'm cutting pills and using a scale to weigh the pieces.

Re: has anyone quit at 5mgs?

You can't get a smaller pill? We can only get 20mg here, I can imagine 30mg pill would be that much more difficult. Some people use a nail file and file the pieces smaller instead of trying to cut them the right size. A scale helps to get the size more accurate.

Re: has anyone quit at 5mgs?

Would your doc be willing to prescribe lower dose pills? I think you can get 10mg pills over there. Even 20mg pills might be easier than 30mg, although I don't know what the actual pill sizes are. Have you tried the nail file method?

my doctor doesn't want me off the paxil, so he's no help at all. i asked the pharmacy if they would fill my 30 mg prescription with 10 mg pills but they said no.

Jean, I agree with Carolyn. I realize your financial situation, but I think it would be beneficial for you to take some time to find a new doc who will work with you.

Here's the thing I say over and over and over....Your doctor works for YOU, not the other way around. If you want liquid Paxil to taper, then you should be able to get liquid Paxil.

Forgive me, if you've answered this before, but why does your doctor want you to stay on Paxil?

Re: has anyone quit at 5mgs?

I've been seeing this guy for 10 years. he says I have a depressive personality and cannot function without an AD and that I should just resign myself to it. He says SSRIs "are perfectly safe and non-toxic." Whenever I have asked for liquid paxil he just says no and won't explain. It cost me about $350 for my first apptment with him, which I assume is a typical cost for a first appt and that's just way more than I can afford.

Re: has anyone quit at 5mgs?

What your doctor is telling you is horse$hit and I think you know it. For the sake of argument, so what if you do have a "depressive personality" (whatever that is)? Has he ever talked to you about therapy or non-medicinal methods of stress reduction and self-esteem?

Would you continue to hire a contractor that trashed your living room and then lied to you about who did it? If you kept winding up with root canals because your dentist wasn't finding your cavities in time, would you keep going to him?

Ditch this guy -- at least for the mental health parts of your relationship, he might be a great GP for broken bones or sniffles -- and find someone who shares your goals.

Re: has anyone quit at 5mgs?

thanks Carolyn. I plan on ditching him just as soon as I'm off this stuff. i have an apptment the first week of august, which i've decided to keep so i can get another round of ambien. i have plenty of paxil to see me through to the end, but I've decided to give myself some time to recover before i taper off the ambien. and this guy is no GP. he's a board certified psychiatrist.

I stopped Prozac at around 5mgs and I was okay. I wouldn't attempt that again tho and suggest that you don't either. You've been cutting pills for so long now... what's a few more months so that you continue to feel good.

Definitely ditch this doctor. Can't imagine why he wouldn't give you the liquid... and not even offer an explanation!

Good luck with the last 5mgs.

Re: has anyone quit at 5mgs?

Jean

I too am at 5mgs and like you my Doctor said I needed meds for life for my panic disorder/depression. I switched doctors and got a script for the pharmacy to make me up a special paxil liquid as it is not available in Austalia.

I would strongly recommend you do the same. I've been on meds for 21 years now but like Carolyn says thru CBT; meditation; regular exercise and the support here I am ( just like you) going to be med . free.((((HUGS))))

I intend to keep tapering 10% until zero. I have been on meds so long I want to give myself the best possible chance of full recovery.

PS My new Doctor was in the same practice and whilst not perfect he at least gives me the script for the liquid !!!!
